KENNEL NOTES.

[contributed.] Fox terrier men will learn with' regret; that Champion Richmond Jack has .gone; over to the great majority. 'He was no-; doubtedly the best fox terrier overseen in,: the Colonies, and it will be some time; before we see his equal. Ho has done good: service at the stud even with limited; opportunities. The best of hia stock ateMelbourne Vixen, Shelford Jack,’Gisborne) Joe, Abbotsford Jack, Harewood Nan,j Eosslyn Edith, and Vixen, Shelford/ Amethyst and Mr Lynott'o Belle. Those, who possess Richmond Jack hitches, may: consider themselves fortunate,, for they; cannot fail to be of special value for, breeding purposes. It is reported that the WalHagton Poultry Association are unwilling to cast', in their lot with the Kennel Club, and to run the two ventures as one concern.' It, is hoped, however, that better counsels willj prevail, for there is no denying the-fact: that it would be a step in the right direo-; tion throughout New’Zealand. I should) like the two interests cemented/for I am; sure, if this course were adopted, wo should; hear of fewer failures than occur underj present conditions. New Zealanders might 1 very well take a lesson from Melbourne 1 and Sydney in this respect. i Mr Martin, of Wellington, has had thoj bad luck to lose hia crack, retriever,! Darkie. This was about the best dog of; hia breed in New Zealand. Darkie aocom-; panied his master on a shooting excursion,: and was, unfortunately, rnn over, thej injuries ha sustained causing death. This | ia not only a loss to Mr Martin, but toj fanciers generally, for this breed of dog; has been sadly neglected* in the Colonies' during the past few years. Mr Triggs has parted with Miss Nancy, a fox terrier bitch of considerable merit, 1 to Mr Osborne, of Wellington. On May 18, the Auckland fox terrier bitch Daisy whelped two dog! and four hitch puppies to Mr Triggs’> Champion, Shelford Jack. Daisy is fcboj dam of Mr Lippitt’s dog Crib, which has done a lot of winning in the North. I hear that Mr P. Rogen, of Karori, Wellington, who may be regarded as one of our principal breeders of fox terriers, ia going out of the fancy. Mr Rogen can ill; bo spared from amongst the already; limited number of fox terrier breeders, but : 1 am glad to learn that Mr Rogen does; nob purpose saying adieu to the dog-; fancy altogether, and has on the way out:a' pair of bull terriers of the best blood 1 procurable. This will be good news to : fanciers of this class of dog. lam told that the dogs will arrive in the Colony shortly, and will undergo their quarantine in Wellington. Mr 0. Row has sold his stud fox terrier, dog Welcome Jack to Mr H. Tripe, of Palmerston North. Jack is plenty big: enongh, but should do something towards improving the breed in his new home. The Wellington Kennel Club is in low water, the last show proving a financial failure. This state of affairs is attributed to the wretched weather which prevailed on both days of the show, the gate money; only realising half what it did the year, before.

I have to acknowledge the receipt of a schedule of the show to take place hr Dunedin on July 11 and 12. The prize: list is a very liberal one, and a number of; valuable special prizes are provided. More-; over, the Committee ,have personally, guaranteed the payment of the prize money; in full. The most valuable “special” is thati contributed by Mr R. E. N. Twopeny, whoj has presented the Society with a twenty! guinea silver cup to bo won by the best fosi terrier in the show, the special condition! of the competition being that before the| cup becomes the absolute property of one' individual, it must be won three times with one dog, or four times with different ones. No doubt this will bring oat a good entry from all parts of New Zealand.! “ Kennelraan,” in the Australasian of May 3 and 10, reviews the kennels of Mr E. Triggs, of Wellington, and Mr F. Biggs, of Christchurch.
