ATHLETIC SPORTS.

SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB. [Bt Telegeaph.j [from oub own correspondent.] TIMAEU, April 30. The twentieth annual sports of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club, commenced to-day in unfavourable weather —cold wind, dull sky and slight showers, with constant threat of more. The attendance, therefore, was lower than usual, under two hundred, the ground looking empty in comparison with former years. The fields being also poor made the first day anything but successful. The track was in good order, but as will be seen the times in no cases reached the standards, still less records, the only record attained being in the vault. Kalaugher, the well-known footballer, appeared for the first time in this field, and so far 'makes a.good show for the championship. Mendelson, another colt, lumped well. Results:— Putting the 161 b Stone— G. E. Rhodes, 31ft llin. Three others competed. Throwing the Cricket Ball—H. G. Bristol, 99yda 2ft 9in. Three others competed. 100yds J. P. Kalaugher 1, J. G. Matheson 2. No others competed. Time —ll|aee. Running High Jump—W. Mendelson sft lin, H. G. Smith 4ft 9ia: Half-mile—P. Morrison 1, W. R. White 2. C. E. Hassal also ran. Won easily. Time —2min lOJsec. One-mile Walk—C. E. Smith 1, J. Hay 2. Won by two hundred and fifty yards. Time —7min 36sec. 120yds Hurdles—J. P. Kalaugher 1, P. Morrison 2. Four others started. Time—--18?-sec. Vault—R. B. Temple 6ft Sin. Three others entered. Won easily; but the winner could not raise the record. 440yda Flat— P. Morrison 1. Two others ran. Won easily. Time—s4Jsec. Three-mile Bicycle Handicap—J. L. Coy 200yds 1, C. Hall scr 2, J. M'Quislan 150yds 3. No others competed. Time—lOmin 17sec. Running Long Jump —W. Mendelson 19ft Sin, Kalaugher 19ft 4£in. Two others entered. 250yds Flat—G. C. Matheson, Kalaugher and P. Morrison also ran. Matheson led all the way. There was a close finish,.
