SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDERS. EANGIORA, There was but a small attendance at the annual meeting of householders at Rangiora on Monday evening, to elect the School Committee for the ensuing year. Mr E. E, Good, Mayor, was voted to the chair. Mr H. Boyd, Chairman of the outgoing Committee, reported that during the year the Committee had held thirteen meetings, all of which had been fairly well attended. The grounds were in good order, the Committee having found their funds sufficient to do all that was required. They were afraid that when the incidental allowances were cut down they would not have sufficient to carry on as heretofore, but the result had proved otherwise. The annual report of the Inspectors was very satisfactory. They trusted that this year’s report would he as good. The average attendance had just reached the number to entitle the school to an additional pupil teacher, and one had been appointed. The average attendance was six higher during the last quarter than in the first quarter of last year. Owing to the irregular attendance of a number of children the Committee decided to put the compulsory clause of the Act into force, and some parents bad been broirght before the Resident Magistrate. The extreme action of the Committee had not had the most beneficial effect, one result having been that some of the irregular attendants had been sent to the private school held in the Church of England schoolroom, and the Education Act had ceased to have any control over them. The receipts for the year had been .£920 19s 4d, and the expenditure .£903 15a 4cl. The expenditure in salaries had amounted to £5793 14s Bd, and for incidentals to £2104 Bs. The proceeds from the entertainment were £217145.

The report was adopted, and on the motion of Mr E. Wright, seconded by the Rev A. Peters, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Committee for their past services.

Mr C. King moved a cordial vote of thanks to the teachers. This was seconded by Mr C. Ailing ton and unanimously carried. ' ' ' "

Mr F. J. Cumberworth, Head master, returned thanks on behalf of the staff. The election of the Committee was then proceeded with. Nine were nominated, and the ballot resulted in the return of Messrs C. King, H. Boyd, W. H. Foster, Rev A. Peters, C. I. Jennings, S. Ayers, and W. H. Luxton. This concluded the business, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting. The newly-elected Committee met afterwards and re-elected Mr H. Boyd,Chairman, and Mr J. B. Mr W. A. Carpenter moved, and Mr W. Hayward • seconded, that the report be adopted, which waa carried unanimously.
