ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held on Monday evening; present Councillors Williamson, H. Priedlander, Brooke, Scott, Keir, Flower, Bird, Sealy, and Cuthberteon. - In the absence of the Mayer, through ill-health. Councillor Williamson was voted to the chair. FINANCIAL. The dehit balance at the bank was reported to be .£1391 12s Id; the receipts since last meeting amounted to <£36 19s. BY-LAWS. The Sergeant of Police wrote, in reply to a letter from the Council, declining to take'any action against unlicensed carriers, unless the Council were prepared to bear the expense of legal assistance. He stated that two cases lately brought under the Council’s by-laws bad broken down. The matter was referred to the Borough solicitor. , - RESERVES. ■ A report from the Reserves Committee, With respect to granting Glasgow leases tol those tenants who had accepted the terms offered by the Council, and recommending the Council to pass a resolution t& jjive, effect to the reduction in rents, determined upon in September, 1888,, was adopted. ' vV'.V . . WORKS. It.was decided to lay down concrete channelling in certain streets on the East ride of the town, and also to re-form some o£ ithe streets in the same locality, : . . THE JUBILEE CLOCK. It was resolved to call tenders for the erection of;a tower for the reception of the Jubilee clock as soon as plans were ready. STREET PLANTING. The Works Committee were instructed to consider the matter of planting trees in Bomeofthe streets of the Borough. Some minor business was dealt with, and the Council adjourned.
