[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, April 23. An extraordinary meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Stud Company is to bo held on Hay 1(5, when a motion to the effect that the Company be wound up voluntarily is to be proposed. Tho formation of a new Company is spoken of. His Excellency tho Governor and Lady Onslow are to leave for Wellington at the end of the present week. Captain Savill, A.D.C., left by the Takapuna to-day. Lady Thurston, wife of Sir John Thurston, returned to Fiji to-day by tho Arawata. Tho first exhibition of the newly-formed Academy of Art was opened to-night, the President, Mr L. 3. Steel, delivering an address. Tho exhibition is a very good one, some splendid work being on view. Among those who sent pictures are several southern artists. PATE A, April 2S. “La grippe” of a very pronounced type has made its appearance, but as yet in only a few cases. WELLINGTON, April 28. A meeting is called for Wednesday night, to discuss the rise in the price of meat, when a co-operative scheme for the protection of the public will be d’seussed. Up to the present the Trade and Labour Council bas paid .2250 for the maintenance of families thrown out of work by the Petone Woollen Mill difficulty. The sum includes levies made by outside Unions. In the Bankruptcy Court to-day, Mr Justice Richmond said ho was not disposed to grant applications for the discharge of persons who filed baoausethey were pressed by judgment summons creditors. The date of the opening of Parliament has been definitely fixed for June 19. On May 1 butchers’ meat will be advanced from -Jd to 2d per lb, according to joints, both beef and mutton. DUNEDIN, April 28. A movement is on foot to raise a fund to purchase one or more of the pictures now in the gallery to form the nucleus of a collection for a national art gallery. The Big Beach return for the fortnight was 116 oz retorted. The Wharf Labourers’ Union have resolved to send a letter thanking the officers of the Janet Nicoll for the manly manner in which they acted by refusing to remain in a ship employing non-Union men. The Federation also offered to defray part of their expenses.
