RAILWAY SERVANTS.

The Committee of the Canterbury Branch of this Society met on Thursday evening. There was a good muster of the Committee, and several other members of the Union were also present. A large amount of correspondence, referring to long hours and non-payment for overtime, was received, but as those subjects have already been brought before the Commissioners by the Executive Committee, it was deemed unnecessary to take any special action in regard to these individual cases. Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of .£5 17s (id. Mr E. M. Taylor, was elected as an honorary member of the branch. Eleven new working members were enrolled. At a previous meeting it had been re-, solved that a ballot of the whole branch should be taken as to the desirability of affiliating with the Canterbury Trade and Labour Council. As not more than half the ballot papers were returned, it was decided that the ballot should remain open till Saturday evening, when a Sub-Com-mittee will scrutinise the votes and declare the result. Up to the night of meeting the returns were, 438 for and IS against affiliation. The sum of .£6 17s was paid into the Treasurer's hands as entrance fees and contributions. Mr J. Edwards, the General Secretary, was among the visitors, and was warmly greeted on his return to Christchurch, Instructions were also given for the issue of circulars and voting papers for another and important ballot.
