A HAPPY THOUGHT (ON SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION).
TO THE EDITOR. Sie, —I have been trying to puzzle out the Government statistics of the school accommodation of the Colony. It is often hard to see one’s way through Government statistics, but I think 1 have hit on one point which may be of value to the Sydenham Borough school. I believe that in the district of New Zealand which was ruined by the Tarawera volcanic explosion, there were one or two deserted schools which were counted in the Government statistics as “ available ” school accommodation. Could not the Sydenham people avail themselves (as the Government evidently think they can) of this very “available” accommodation, either by sending their children up to the North Island, or by transferring a school and a half from the North Island to Sydenham ? Then the remaining half school (remaining where it is, of course) might, according to the orthodox Atkinsonian method of calculation, be considered as “ available ” school accommodation for New Brighton.—l am, &c., LARRIKIN.
