SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CUTE.

Second Day—Sept. 20. Handicapper, Mr George Dowse : Starter, Mr J. Meiklo. The weather at Timaru yesterday was a pleasant contrast to that of the previous day. On Thursday, cold, pitiless rain Ml during the whole of the afternoon, and by no stretch of the imaginatiaa bokiU hha outing be considered an enjoyable gmjj? but yesterday the sun shone oat with all the geniality of spring, and the •nmtty course at Washdyke and its roundings were seen at their best. . attendance, thanks to the better meteso* logical conditions, showed a improvement, and although the' card far from an attractive one, the sport pcovwd more interesting than that of Thusedeah* Racing commenced with the Spring Hurdle Race, in which the veteran Presto qudom grief and broke his neck, and Loins broke down, leaving Waitangi to win eiewHSf from the rest. Hobbs’ stable' had tiur Gladstone Handicap all to itself, and Road Metal, a brother to Sir Julius, was fertw than Quibble in the brush home. The Trot was of the usual processional order, and then halt a dozen went out to the Publicans* Handicap. Wolverine emit made favourite, but he tan no better than on Thursday, and Little Sham* rock won rather cleverly from St Malo, who appeared a trifle sore from hie bmcc tions of the previous day. Tramp showed how much he prefers a course without fences by winning the Bracelet, and Road Metal appropriated the Ladies’ Purse after a good race with Prima Donna. The Con* eolation, which was run an hour awd a behind time, and won by Erin-go-Braghi concluded the card and the meeting, xh* officials deserve a passing word of praise, Mr Dowse succeeded in puzzling haebjem during the whole of the meeting, and the genial handicapper is evidently in bettor form than some of the animals with which he had to deal. Mr Meikle’a success with the flag excused a veiy faulty style «f starting, but the delays at the post were in several instances unnecessarily pro* longed. Mr Teschemaker, the President, who is something more than a figure-head, kept things going merrily from the start, and Mr Eiby fully maintained the reputation he has established as one of the most capable and courteous Secretaries in the country. The minor officials, the hardworked Clerks of the scales and course, ably supported their more prominent colleagues. The meeting, it is gratifying to add, has turned out a flnuwntai success for the Club. The following are details of the racing:—
