THE RAILWAY COMMISSIONERS.

GENERAL OPINION.

The appointment of Messrs M'Eerrow, Maxwell and Hannay tothe position of Railway Commissioners was a principal topic of conversation in commercial circles on Saturday. Opinions on the subject were divided. Some persons believe that the new Board will prove simply an old friend with a new face. Others express surprise at the appointment of Mr M'Eerrow, who, they has neither the commercial nor the technical knowledge of railways which, they consider, are required. Mr M'Kerrow’s integrity and sound common sense are, however, generally admitted, and one gentleman remarked that it was better for the Chief Commissioner to be a non-expert, who could be trusted, than an expert who, perhaps, could not. Messrs Maxwell and Hannay are, by some, spoken of as thoroughly good men, who have, hitherto, been unable to manage the railways satisfactorily, because they were not allowed to follow out their own ideas. Now, it is to be presumed, they will be more at liberty to do so than under the old system. £Peb Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 13. It is understood that Mr Percy Smith, of Auckland, Assistant Surveyor-General, will succeed Mr J. M'Eerrow as SurveyorGeneral. The Railway Commissioners will, it is believed, enter on their duties at the end of this month.
