Mr Hannay, Assistant-Manager of the Now Zealand Railways, met a deputation of dairy factory representatives, who urged a reduction of the tariff on dairy produce, stating that if this were done the railway would get the trade instead of the coastal steamers as at present. It was pointed out that the Department now carried goods from Port Chalmers to Invercargill for 17s 6d per ton, and the deputation thought there was no reason why the same rate should not rule both ways.
