[Pkb Pbess Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. The Hospital staff have presented Miss Crisp, the retiring Lady Superintendent, with an illuminated address and a silver tea set, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. The petition to the City Council from leaseholders on the Auckland Market Eeserve, praying for a reduction of rent, was referred to the Legal Committee for consideration. The Star to-day publishes a letter, showing that the sweating system prevails in Auckland on the same lines as in Christchurch and Dunedin. A number of City Council lessees have lodged a petition, praying for a reduction of rent. The petition will be considered at the Council’s meeting to-night. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 25. The Supreme Court was opened by Judge Gillies this morning. There are seven prisoners charged with various crimes. Eobert Jackson, alias Patrick Loughran, an old offender, pleaded “ Guilty” to breaking and entering houses and robbing them. He was sentenced to seven years, and Joseph James Saddler, for larceny, was sentenced to nine months. HOKITIKA, Oct. 25. Father Walsh, Parish priest at Kumara, sustained severe bruises by a fall from his buggy while; going to Waimea. He was unconscious for three-quarters of an hour. buggy to Kumara. His injuries are believed not to he serious. DUNEDIN, Oct. 25. Janet Oliver, a boardinghouse-keeper, was fined £lO and costs to-day for sly-grog selling. Tho Mararoa takes nearly 600 passengers, while many are shut out. The project for holding an exhibition here is meeting with much favour. It is expected that Mr Eoberts» President of the Chamber of Commerce, will head the proposed guarantee fund with*.£soo. Several merchants promise JSIOO each. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 25. M. and H. Mair, of Invercargill, are the successful tenderers for a brick watertower 90ft high and 2S_ft square at the base, labour only, at .£1497. It is believed that a drowning accident has occurred in the Mataura river. Mr Sinclair, the Manager of Birchwood Station, found a team belonging to Andrew Macfarlane at the Mataurb, Island ford. One horse was drowned, and Macfarlane is missing.
