A TERRIBLE STORM.

SEVEN VESSELS WRECKED. TWENTY-FOUR LIVES LOST. fur ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.] [Special to Press Association,] [Received August 9, at 8.50 p.m.j VALPARAISO, August 7. A terrible storm was experienced at this port yesterday. During the gale seven vessels were driven ashbre and completely wrecked. Twentyfour persons were drowned, and many seriously injured. Great damage was also done in the city by the fury of the storm. [Possibly the peculiarities of the ff Vale of Paradise,” the most important port on the Chilian coast, may have had much to do with the severity of tim disaster. A high and broad mountain ridge forms a crescent round the wide bay, towards the shores of which it descends in steep escarpments. Fifteen or sixteen watercourses have furrowed the slopes of this coast ridge, forming embrados, or deep dells, bath sides of which are dotted all over with houses. Skirting the bay runs a circular road, between the edge of the water and the overhanging cliffs, formed partly by filling in the low-lying beach, and partly by blasting away the projecting rocks. Prom this roadway a few jetties are run out. Of shelter for shipping from storm there is none, either natural or artificial. The dock, a floating one, is moored off at a convenient distance.]
