WELLINGTON GOSSIP.

[Br Telegraph.] [FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 1. There has been such an absolute absence of anything like news, or even gossip, on any subjects, political or otherwise, during last week, that 1 have not thought it worth while to give you an insight by means of vapid messages into the extreme dullness of Wellington. At present things political are ultra-quiescent, and although there are numerous Cabinet meetings, the business transacted thereat is, as fur as I can learn, wholly of a formal departmental nature. Retrenchment is being carried out in one or two departments to a limited extent, and one occasionally hears of someone’s services being dispensed with, but nothing of any importance has taken place yet in this direction. I have an idea that Ministers are not too anxious for an early session. The Minister for Lands left to-day for Canterbury, on a visit of inspection to the proposed site of your much-desired rabbit fence. The Government are taking great interest in the subject of the rabbit pest, and Mr Richardson especially is taking deep interest in M. Pasteur and his experiments, with a view to what might possibly be done in that direction in the Colony, but I have great doubts of the likelihood of the boundary fence being approved of, as there seems to be little doubt, as far at any rate as the information at present held by the Government goes, that it would be somewhat like shutting the door after the loss of the proverbial stud.
