A COMPLAINT.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —As a daily traveller on the Christ-church-New Brighton road, I am fully convinced that the nice little suburb of Shirley has more than its share of foul and objectionable, if not injurious, odours arising from piggeries and other establishments adjoining Dudley Creek and Canal Reserve road, as about here may be found receptacles for swill and rubbish, and there the occasional shifting of liquid and solid manures even to within a few feet of the public footpath. Smokers certainly have an advantage in loading their pipes just here to help them through, but what about non-smokers, females, and children, as well as delicate persons seeking fresh air at New Brighton, and also some of the residents of Shirley who suffer more or less from it continuously. I also understand that, within a stone’s throw of some of the above establishments, a fatal case of diphtheria has just taken place. Now, Sir, I think you will agree with me that some authority should step in without delay; lest, in view of the approaching hot weather, we may have something still more serious to record.—l am, &c., PURE AIR AND GOOD HEALTH. New Brighton, Nov, 8.
