Total 286,036 The above total is somewhat smaller than that given in our last issue, owing to tho qnantitv of i.ape wool brought by tbe Hawarden Castle proving to be less than was estimated. As about 33,000 bates have been forwarded to t e manufacturing districts direct, and, si.v, 30,000 bales wore bald over from the third series, the net available total for the current auctions is about 283,000 bales. With the exception of good combing wools in the grease, which are in comparatively short supply, and sell freely at from par to id more money than was obtainable at the close of last series, au classes of merino have developed elements of weakness since the opening on fcept. 6. Medium and inferior descriptions in the grease are about id per lb lower than at the close of last sales, a similar decline is apparent in fleece washed, whilst medium to good ssonreds are id to Id per lb down, and on faulty, seedy, and burry scoureds the fall is Id to lid per lb. Crnes-breds, until recently, fairly held their own,_ bat, during the past few days, greasy sorts, especially those of fine quail>y, have hardly sold so well as at the opening, white scoureds have to a certain extent participated in the decline shown by other wools in similar condition. Merino lambs, of which the bulk of present supplies is more or less faulty, are id to Id per lb lower than at the > close of last series, and cross-bred sorts are easier in price.. Home buyers, until recently, have operated with considerable freedom, but as their wants are becoming supplied, and the Continental sections of tho trade still maintain a somewnat reserved attitude, the tone of tho market is hardly so good as during the earlier part of the Biles. It has been arranged that the sale progiamme shall be curtailed by two days. Up to date tho following quantities have been catalogued: Bales.

Total .... 7.191 Tallow.—For tbe two public suctions held since the date of our last circular, 2483 oarka Australian and New Zealand produce were catalogued, but only 1306 of these found havers under the hammer. Fine qualities, both of beef and mutton, have been comparatively neglected, and relative quotations have nominally receded to the extent of about i s per cwt. Ci mmon and medium sorts have, however been in fair request at rates somewhat easier than those recently current. For edible sorts there la at present no demand. We quote:—Australasian mutton, fine, 23s 6d per cwt; do do, medium, 23sand 21s per cwt; do beef, flue, 2.’s 6d per cwt; do do, medium, 21s aad 2ls 6d per cwt. Importations into London during tho fortnight ended ciept. 17, amounted to IWO casks. The estimated stock in warehouse is 15,390 casks, of which ISO are Russian, For this day's auctions 1640 casks are advertised. Messrs Milks and Co. report nnder date London, Pept, 23, as follows: Wheat, Flour, ac.—Uur wheat market has still a do wuward tendency, and, in consequence of the liberal supplies of English wheats these deser p. tiona have fallen Is 3d during the fortnight. Colonial wheats have not shtred fully the dec.ine, but may bo bought for 6d to Is less money, the supplies afloat to this country show eomo falling off. the quantity now being estimated at 1,86>X00 quarters, while the ” visible supply ” in America has also decreased, tho quantity now being 5i.050,000 bushels. There have been no fresh arrivals of Australian wheat, and stocks on hand meet with a slow sale at 32s 8d to 33s per 4061 b ox store. On pansage, the price is about 31s per 4S9lb, From New Zealand the br er Holme has arrived, with 11,560 sacks wheat, and will shortly be placed on the market. The demand tor New Zealand parcels is extremely limited, as millers are able to supply tbeir wants wi h new English at low prices. Long-berried may be quoted at 30s to 32a, and average 29s to 31s 6d per 4961 bex store. Flour is in rathe better demand. Australian superfine is worth 24s to Sts 6d, up to »5s 6d to 26s for i atentj ordinary superfine New Zealand, 20s to 21s, and Satents 22s to 22s 6d per 2801 bex store. Oats are nil of sile, Now Zealand sorts being at 20s to 23s per 3841 bex granary. Best m tlting barley is firm" at late values, viz., 27s to 33s per 4461 b cur for lower sorts there is very little demand- New Zealand beans and peas are fairly steady: tho former make 33s 6d to 33s 6d, and the latter, boiling sorts, S'is to 35s per 6041 bex store. Frozen Meat.-Trade was fairly good last week nntil Saturday, when the wea' her completely upset the prices, and some very low prices ware taken. This week tho market has partially recovered itself. but to-day there is a plentiful supply of homakilled and very little demand. However, there’s not a large supply of frozen on the market, and consequently prices for New Zealand mutton remain tolerably firm. A large snpp yof Dutch killed mutton is beginni g now to come over, but being rather of an Inferior quality, dies not realise very high prices. Some of tha shippers now leave the kidney fat in the s op. 11 his will in many cases interf-re with tbe sale, and sheep with ou'. the fat will always get the preference. If supplies of frozen mutton should continue short prices should gradually improve. The Selembria is expected to flock next, week with aboat 12,0f0 sheep. Prices to-day: bcotch sheep, 4. 2d to 4s 8d ; " nglish, 4s to 4s 68; foreign, 3a 8d to 4a; ewe, Ss to 8a fid; Canterbury, New Zinland, 2s 8d to zs lOd. and 3s; W liiugton, 2a 7d to 2s 9d; Australian, Sydney, 2a SJ; Kiver Plato, 2s sd,
