KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held on Tuesday night; present—The Mayor, and Councillors Oram, Humphreys, May, Blakeley, Brighting, and Stanton. COEEESPONDENCE. Letters were read;— From the Jubilee Committee, asking the Council to co-operate. From the surveyor, asking for an increase of salary. It was resolved to defer the consideration of this request till next meeting. From seven ratepayers, asking that Cass and Hall streets might be formed and improved. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. From the Kegistrar-General, asking for certain returns. From the Eangiora Borough Council, inviting the Mayor to attend at a meeting to be held at Eangiora. KEI’OETS OF COMMITTEES. Councillor Blakely reported for the Finance Committee the receipts for past fortnight to be—Eates, £lO 12s; dogs, £5 10s; pound fees, £1 ss; debit balance at bank, £G4O 10s; and recommended accounts for payment amounting to £6B 17s 4d. In explanation of one of the accounts. Councillor Oram said the amount was due to Mr Linklater for work done to the bridge which was not provided for in his schedule of duties. He might say that since this work was done, that part of the lift dealt with could be opened with ease by one man; before it used to take at least three. The report was adopted. CoixncUlor Stanton moved and Councillor Brighting seconded—“ That a Committee, consisting of the Works and Finance Committees, with the mover, revise the schedule of duties of caretaker and poundkeeper.” Carried. Councillor Blakely moved, and Councillor May seconded —"That the Clerk report on the advisability of lowering the levels of side channels in Cookson and Davis streets to next meeting.” Carried. Councillor Blakely read a statement of the estimated receipts and expenditure of the Council for the year ending March 31, 1888, showing receipts to be £1550 14s 9d, expenditure, £1950 14s 9d. The Mayor pointed out that it would be necessary for Committees to practice strict economy for the next twelve months, and not exceed the amounts put down for the various works. If this were done their position would be much improved by the end of the year. Re the question of the Queen’s Jubilee, he was ot opinion that the Council could do no better than support the scheme for providing shelter for the aged poor. He had, however, heard that several of the townspeople were in favour of raising funds to purchase a recreation ground close to the town. He was afraid that it would bo impossible to raise sufficient money for this purpose, but he thought that enough could be found to finish the improvements in Darnley square,, which, when completed, would provide sufficient space for years to come. Towards a scheme of this kind the Council could. contribnte, and entertainments, no doubt, would be given by various Societies interested. He thought it might be advisable to call a public meeting to consider the question. On the motion of Councillor May, it was resolved—" That the Mayor call a public meeting to consider the matter at an early date.” The meeting then terminated.
