LINWOOD TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday, April 19; present—Messrs Hardie, Atkinson, Toomer (Chairman), Goodman, and Jamieson. A letter was read from Mr Bergh, apologising for not being present at the meeting owing to absence from town, and an apology was read from Mr Glen who was absent through illness. The resolution calling the meeting having been read, it was resolved —"That the resolution to make a by-law for the prevention of the burial of nightsoil or other offensive matter within the Linwood town district, be hereby confirmed.” Messrs Clephano and Eye waited upon the Board, being deputed by a public meeting held on April 15, to urge upon the Board the adviaableness of not making the by-law compulsory over the whole district, as many ratepayers use the soil with great advantage in their gardens. A letter bearing on the subject was read from Mr G. S. Porter, as also a petition signed by ten ratepayers from the neighbourhood of Ollivier's road. The proposed by-law having been read, it was resolved to amend the same by the addition of the words " without the written consent of the Board of the said Town District being first obtained.” It was then unanimously resolved —That the by-law, as amended, bo adopted, and the Board’s seal affixed thereto.” The ordinary meeting, adjourned from April 18, was then held. Correspondence was read: —From the Gas Company, re lamp found extinguished on April 12. From Mr J. Shoolbraid, asking the Board to reduce the valuation of his property. To be informed that, as the Board base the rate on the Property tax valuation, it has no power to reduce the valuation until the expiration of the Property tax period. From Mr W. H. Hargreaves, asking to have Mrs H. Meddings’ name placed on the roll instead of his own. To be informed that his application has come too late for the current year. From the South Waimakariri Eiver Board, special order directing a rate of three sixty-fourths of a penny in the £, to be levied for year ending March 31, 1888. From Drainage Board, directing a rate of Jd in the £ over the sewage area, and a rate of one-sixth of a penny in the £ over the rural area, to be levied for the year ending Dec. 31, 1887. From St Albans Borough Council, re fees for auctioneers’, cabmen’s and carriers’ licenses. Received. From Drainage Board, re commission to be paid for collecting their rates. To be informed that the same rate as hitherto will be charged in addition to any special expense incurred. The balance-sheet for the year ending March 31, 1887, duly audited by the Provincial District Auditor, was laid on the table. Eesolved—"That a special meeting for settling the same be held at 7.15 p.m. on May 2.” FromjEegistrar-Qeneral, asking for copy of balance-sheet. The Clerk stated that it had been forwarded. From district engineer, stating that the broken metal purchased by the Board must be paid tor at once, and delivery taken as it stands after being measured, and that three months will be allowed for carting it away. To reply that the Board cannot accept the additional conditions imposed. The Works Committee reported upon the work done by Mr Brightling under his shingle contract, and stated that Mr E. Eobinson’s offer to lower Wells street had been accepted. Approved of. The Lighting Committee reported : —Re lamp at Cowlishaw’s corner, erection not recommended. New lamps: They recommended the erection of a lamp at the corner of Gloucester street and Stanmore road, at the corner of Hereford street and Stanmore road, and at the corner of Nursery road and Hill View street, and that the Sydenham Borough Council be requested to contribute towards the cost of ttie lamp at the corner of Philip street and Perry road, the conditions having changed considerably since the erection of the lamp. Adopted. The Finance Committee presented the estimated receipts and expenditure for the current year and sundry accounts for payment; reported receipts since last meeting .£43 7a 4d,debtor balance at bank £‘3l 8s lid; and recommended that sundry persons who have not satisfied judgments for rates be informed that they must be paid by May 2, and that the Woolston Town Board be asked for their contribution towards the maintenance of the pound.” The report was adopted. An order to exit a gorse hedge was made, and the seal affixed to contracts 25 and 27. The Board then sat as the Local Board of Health. The Inspector’s report was read and adopted, and the meeting terminated.
