A short time ago a boat containg fourteen persons was successfully worked on the Seine with artificial wings acting on the air, and propelled by a rotating wheel. It is stated that there are in America, of all denominations, 140 theological seminaries, and that only two or three of them date back to 1800. More than half of them have been organised within the last forty years. It is reported that the failing state of the German Emperor’s health renders hia proposed presence at the marriage of his grandson. Prince Henry, with Princess Irene of Hesse next month, exceedingly doubtful. The captain of the Red Star line steamer Waesland reports that just after leaving the English Channel his vessel struck and killed a whale, which was apparently sleeping on the water. The vessel escaped without injury. The Colchester Town Council has determined to celebrate the Jubilee by restoring and enlarging the Town Hall at a cost of £13,000. Subscriptions are to be invited in aid, so as to reduce the sum which it will otherwise be necessary to borrow. The late Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Childers, is, on both his father’s and mother’s side, a descendant of that Jew, Sampson Gideon, who, after formally apostatising from the Synagogue, begged iu his will that he might be buried among the Jewish people.
