ROAD BOARDS.

ASHLEY. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the Bead Biard Office on Thursday, April 7; present— Messrs Barker, Brown, Duncan, and O’ Ualloran.—Mr Duncan was voted to the chair —A telegram was read from Mr Nicholls, apologising for non-attendance. —Correspondence was read and dealt with, —Mr Peter Duncan saw the Board, re excess of acreage of land put down on the valuation roll—that according to a recent survey he is charged for more land than what there actually is. The Clerk was instructed to write te the Survey Office to ascertain the correct acreage, so that the matter may be corrected.—Tenders were opened for works advertised, and one in each case accepted.—Mr Million asked the Board to form the road from the Birch. Hill road along the east aide of Wash Pool gully to the top of the cutting leading toward the Ashley ; and also a few chains along the bank of the Ashley. The Clerk was instructed to inspect and report to next meeting of the Board.—Mr Million drew attention to contractors taking shingle out of Wash Pool gully, who in doing so broke down the fences and neglected to put them up again. He suggested that a gate be erected by the Board and when shingle is not being taken out to be kept locked.—Respecting the gravel pit on his land fronting on the Birch Hill road, he did not object to the Board taking what shingle is required for repairs for the road fronting his property, but he considered that shingle required for the road running through the adjoining property should be taken out of that property. The Board informed Mr Million that it would see to the matter. —Mr T. White asked if the Board would allow him compensation for the loss of a horse caused by a fence being erected across the Terrace road. The Board informed Mr White that it did not acknowledge any liability in the the matter. —Mr Louis Powell asked the Board to clear the tussocks, and break the large stones on Quarry road from White Rock station north to the Karetu. He also drew attention to the fact that the road through Dr Brins’ property to Mr Bell’s had not been shingled, as agreed upon when the land for this road was granted. He asked that the portion of road east of the creek be shingled, and the cuttings on both sides improved. The Clerk was instructed to report on the same at next meeting of the Board. —Mr Eeadhead asked that his name be put on tbe Valuation Roll, as occupier of sections 34744 and 34719. To be attended to—An account was received from Mr John Judson, claim £ls. for loss of time with men and teams, caused through the Board allowing the Terrace road to be fenced and otherwise stopped. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Judson that the Board gave no one permission to put a fence across the Terrace road, therefore his claim cannot be entertained.—The Clerk’s report was read and considered. Re contract for stubbing gorse on Stony Plat road, the Clerk was instructed to inform the contractor that the work will be taken out of his hands and completed at his expense. Contract for widening drain on Stony Plat road: As this contract is not commenced, it was decided to invite fresh tenders for ‘the work.—lb was decided to hold a special meeting of the- Board on April 28.—The Clerk was instructed to invite tenders for the further extension of Kuku Pass road, tenders to be sent in by April 28; also, for Loburn-Eowai road from Horseshoe cliS to Broderick’s road, on to the termination of the same.—lt was decided to hold the annual meeting of ratepayers on May 4, and election of members. May s.—Mr Thomas Casserley waited on the Board re drain through his land fronting on Barker’s road. He wished the' Board to construct a shoot to prevent the drain being scoured nearer to the bridge, and also to prevent his land from being washed away. It was decided that Mr Duncan and the Clerk inspect the drain and report to next meeting of the Board.—Accounts amounting to £255 4s Hd were passed for payment, and the Beard adjourned.
