SWIMMING RACES.

WEST CHEISTCHHECH SCHOOL. The West Christchurch School swimming races were held yesterday afternoon in the school bath. The number of entries was much larger than in previous years. Messrs D. Beese, M.H.8., and P. G. Hawley, Chairman of the School Committee, acted as judges; Mr A. Francis, Captain of the Amateur Swimming Club, was referee, and Mr T. S. Foster, starter. A silver medal, offered by Mr Francis for the winner of the highest number of points, was won by Albert Saunders. Mr D. Beese presented a second medal to David Duncan, who was only one point behind Saunders. The programme of events was as follows: Champion Handicap. Four lengths of bath —David Duncan, 1; Albert G. Saunders, 2. Plunging Competition.—George Tacon (32ft lOin), 1. 50yds Handicap.—F. Greenup, 1; A. Forbes, 2; A. Orr, 3. Long Dive.—A. Saunders, 1; W. Wright, 2. The winner of this event dived the full length of the bath, turned at the end under water and rose to the surface when he reached the starting point. Learners’ Handicap. One length of the bath; twenty-three entries—P. Cresswell, 1; W. Parker, 2; W. Berti, 3; George Bush, 4. Hurdle Handicap. Two lengths; nineteen entries—William Patterson, 1; J. - Bodger, 2; D. Duncan and A. Saunders (equal), 8. Slow Eaoe.—George Tacon, 1. Tub Bace.—H. Walker, 1; J, Patterson, 2. This was a very popular event, attracting no less than twenty-three entries. Consolation Handicap (over thirteen). — N. Johnston, 1. Consolation Handicap (under thirteen). — Peter Currie, 1; Alex. Orr, 2.
