COURTENAY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual Exhibition of the above Society was held in the Orange Hall, Courtenay, on Thursday, Dec. 23. The weather was beautifully fine, the attendance of visitors good, and the whole affair, despite the predictions of those unfortunate individuals, croakers, was a great success, and keen competition was shown in nearly all classes. In pot plants and cut blooms the entries were not quite so numerous as on some previous seasons, but was declared by the judges to be superior in quality to those of previous shows. In vegetables and fruit the competition was strong, entries very largo, and in point of quality were a great credit to the district. A special exhibit of apples by Mr P. V. Jones attracted considerable attention. Appended is the prize list:

The athletic sports, under the auspices of the Courtenay Horticultural Society, were held in an adjoining paddock, under the management of Messrs H Peat and G. T. Robertson, and although the competitors in most of the events were but few, some really good performances were shown. Mr W. M’Lennan acted as judge, Mr W. Turner starter, and Messrs W. A protest was lodged against the winner for running inside one of the flags, which the Committee could not but sustain, although M’Beth ran a pretty race, and, gaining very little by being off the course, passed the post with a good deal in hand. Grain (37yds), 2. A ball in aid of the funds of the Horticultural Society was held in the evening, and was fairly attended, Messrs Belgrave and Simpson providing the music.
