PRESENTATION.
♦ On Saturday at the Land Office, Messrs Andrew Pinwill, of the Deeds Registration Office, and J. A. Ambrose, of the Land Transfer Office, : were presented with mementoes of esteem by members of the legal profession. The souvenirs were, in respect of the first-named gentleman, a solid silver inkstand and a binocular in case, and in respect of the last named a diamond ring, a handsome breast pin and a set of gold studs, engraved with the recipient's monogram. The inkstand bore the inscription, " Presented with a binocular to Mr Andrew Pinwill by the legal profession, as a mark of their respect and esteem, Christchurch, July, 1886 " Mr Pinwill has been promoted to be the Registrar at Dunedin, and Mr Ambrose has been transferred to the Head Office at Wellington; his transfer being also a promotion. The articles forming the presentation were excellent specimens of work from the establishment of Messrs Petersen and Co. The Committee who collected the subscriptions were Messrs Thomas Papprill, T. C. Cunningham, and C. J. Marshall. Mr Cunningham took the chair, and apologised for the absence of Mr Papprill, who had heartily entered into the matter. After speaking of the uniform conrtesy he had experienced from his boyhood from Messrß Pinwill and Ambrose, the Chairman called upon Mr Weston to make the presentation. Mr Weston, in a neatly-turned speech, accomplished the task imposed upon him, in the course of his remarks paying a high compliment to the gentlemen the meeting had assembled to honour, and to the Civil Service generally. He congratulated Messrs Pinwill and Ambrose on their promotion, and expressed the hope that this was only a prelude to further advancement. Messrs Pinwill and Ambrose briefly acknowledged the liberality and goodwill shown to them, stating that their feelings got the better of their speech. This terminated the proceedings. It should be stated that Messrs Pinwill, Ambrose, and Ross, who also is leaving Christchurch, have received presentations from their confreres.
