[Pee Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 30. At the police court, this morning, James Milne, charged with stealing a gold watch, was committed for trial. The prisoner was only released yesterday from the Mount Eden gaol, and committed the offence within twelve hours after his liberation. Court, under the Statute of George the Third, by which parties removing furniture fraudulently, to evade paying rent, are liable for twice its value. ■The case was against the owner of the furniture and a firm of auctioneers for removing furniture to prevent the landlord from distraining. Judgment was given against the owner of the furniture for £2O, but the Magistrate said that, although the circumstances were suspicious, the auctioneer did not appear to know that the rent was due, and only ordered the costs to be paid.
