[Per Press Association.j WELLINGTON, Mat 20. The Gazette notifies the promotion of Major Maillard Noake to be LieiitenantColonel in the New Zealand Militia. Dr Gustave Travers has been provision-
ally recognised as German Consul-General for Australia at Sydney, with jurisdiction , in New Zealand. Alexander M'Kay has been appointed Commissioner to enquire into claims to land by the Maoris and half-castes in the Middle Island who are not provided witk land. Mr E. M. Taylor is gazetted as the member for Sydenham. Mr J, E. March is gazetted as Steward of village special settlements for the Canterbury district. Lieutenant E. Linn is gazetted as Captain and A. W. Andrews as Lieutenant of the Sydenham Eifles. The resignation of Quarter-Master W H. Mathews, of the Ist Battalion Canterbury Eifles, has been accepted.
