Sib, —There has been great rejoicing over the signing of the contract for the West Coast and Nelson Eailway, and everyone seems to take it for granted that the money to be expended upon that work must improve the condition of the, working men here, and help to revive trade. But before joining in the jubilations of my neighbours, I should like to know whether any steps have been taken to prevent the importation of cheap labour (say Chinese) by the contractors, and the monopolisation by them of the trade with their employees. Unless this is seen to in time, we may find that, instead of relieving the existing depression, the formation of the Eailway may. after all, only add to it.—l am, &c., J ENQUIEEE.
