Maligner was quickest on his legs, followed by Captain Webster and Spade Guinea a length away. Hermitage' fourth and Madonna lasti On settling down. Maligner was leading Spade Guinea by a length, the same distance separating the latter and Captain Webster, Atbol Daisy, Hermitage, Patrician and Tit Bit following in that order. These positions were unaltered as they passed Cutts’ and turned into the back stretch, but nearing Ford’s Spade Guinea closed on Maligner, and the pair rounded the top turn, with Captain Webster at their heels, Athol Daisy at the latter’s girths. Hermitage, Patrician, and Tit Bit on even terms two lengths away, and Madonna hopelessly out of it. Maligner again drew out as they came round the bend for home, but when fairly in the straight Captain Webster was Ist out, and, quickly disposing of Spade Guinea, went up to Maligner, and the pair soon left the others, and had the race to themselves. The favourite, however, was m difficulties at the rails, and Captain Webster galloped borne a pretty easy winner by a clear length. Spade Guinea, ten lengths away, third, Athol Daisy fourth. Betting : 4 to 1 agst Nelson, G to 1 each agst Lancer and Matchlock, 7 to 1 each agst Brown and Eose and Eingmaster, 10 to 1 each agst New York and Cerise and Blue; 20 to 50 to 1 any other. ; At the fifth time of asking the flag was lowered to a somewhat straggling start, the colours of The Jewel showing quite clear from Matchlock, Preston and Silver Mine, who led past the stand by a length and a-half. Peeress next, a neck in front of Tom Brown, and after ■ them at an interval of a short length, came Preston, Matchlock, The Jewel, Nelson, Cerise and Blue, Brown, and Rose, and Prince Imperial. Silvermine, close against the rails, was the first to turn into the straight, attended by the fasttiring Matchlock, while Nelson, on the extreme left, shone brilliantly for a moment, and then went down with all the New Zealand money. Cerise and Blue made her effort, but stumbled and nearly came to grief. Colley, however, soon had her in blind again, and the gallant little daughter, of Wilberforce, answering every call, challenged Silver Mine at the distance, raced with him for a few strides, left him, and won the Cup by a length amidst a roar of applause. Britisher, who had been in a bad place all tl e way, but came home at a wonderful pace, was only beaten by a neck for second place, and then on very close terms, succeeded Lancer, New York, Brown and Eose, Eingmaster, and Nelson, who were followed by Tempo, The Jewel, Tom Brown, Preston, and Matchlock, while the last to finish were Eifle Shot and Cyclops. Time—3min 33-|sec. Nelson’s defeat is ascribed to his being too big in condition.
