The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Hawea arrived from Dunedin yesterday morning, and left for Manukau and way ports in the evening. The Union Steamship Company’s steamer To Anau arrived from Auckland and way ports yesterday morning, end left for Melbourne and Southern porta in the afternoon. The barque Victoria was cleared at the Customs yesterday by Messrs Jamieson and Malcolmson, for Hobart, with a cargo of produce. The steamer Tim urn arrived from Westport yesterday afternoon, with a cargo of coal. We understand that Mr C. W. Turner has arranged to place the steamship Triumph iu the trade between Sydney, Newcastle, Lyttelton and Bluff during the present produce season. The steamer, under the command of Captain M’Cee, late of the s.s. Waihora, sailed irom Newcastle with a cargo of coals for Mr Turner on Sunday last., and is expected in this port about Saturday, May 22. Mr Turner has arranged with the Union Steam Shipping Company to act as agents in Sydney and Newcastle, also locally, the steamer loading in their line; and ho has also fixed the steamer for Calcutta in August, loading a carge of horses, returning with a cargo of cornsacts for Lyttelton and Dunedin. Omapere, for Greymouth. Wanaka, for Nelson. The captain of the schooner Croydon Lass, which put in here, reports that he left Havelock on Monday, May 10, hound for Lyttelton. Was off Gore Bay, fifty miles from Lytteltbn, on Thursday night at eight o’clock. On Friday morning encountered a terrible squall, which put the vessel on her beam ends and flooded her decks. Cut the lashings of the deck load and threw ;tha timber overboard, thereby relieving the vessel and enabling her to right herself. Meanwhile the mainsail had split, and other sails blew away as fast as they could be set. (rigged sea anchor, and by that means rede out the gale, with the loss, of all the fresh water on board and the destruction of a portion of her bulwarks, which had to be knocked away to clear the vessel. On Saturday, at noon, the wind lulled, and at 8 p.m, came up again from the south-east, gradually veering to the S.S. W., and blew another heavy gale, which lasted until Monday morning. At 7 a.m. on Monday the vessel was about 25 miles E.S.E. off Cape Campbell, and close to a large three-masted steamer, likewise hove-to. Made sail and stood in for land, tho steamer likewise getting unHer weigh. Had been two days without water. The Croydon Lass will proceed on her voyage tonight. Dunedin, May 18.
