MUNICIPAL.

CITY COUNCIL. The City Council held an ordinary meeting last night; present—His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Vincent, Prndhoe, Crooks, Hosking, Manning, Gray, Tait, Andrews, Bowman, and Grinsted. Apologies were made for the absence of Councillors Kiver and Louisson.THB LATE FLOODS. The Mayor said that since the last meeting Christchurch had been visited by the severest flood ever known since the settlement of the Province. Though damage had been done, there was every reason for congratulation that it had been so slight. The manner in which the water had been got rid of was simply marvellous, and due to the excellent! drainage. Any damage done could be; purely attributed to the act of God. i He had caused inquiries to he made in the city and suburbs, and, to his satisfaction, found that not so many cases of distress existed as antici-| pated, but still many of the wages had suffered great loss. He knew of one| instance in which five pairs of boots, the? whole belonging to one family, had been| carried away. He bad convened a meet-s ing, and the necessary organisation for the? relief of distress had been formed. The| Circus company had given a performance! For the benefit of the charities, and most; generously had handed him the whole of ! the proceeds, not even deducting the| nominal expenses of the night. He could) not but express, in the name of the Coun-j nil, his hearty thanks for so genuine and| Igenerous a donation. This was considered satisfactory. The Mayor mentioned that the Borough (Banking account was only overdrawn by ; £391 19s lOd. Accounts amounting to £lls 0a 3d were passed for payment. The Engineer at the Pumping Station reported a small damage to the roof of the pumping house during the late gale. The Works Committee reported considerable damage to streets and drainage works , during the recent gales. They had been obliged to employ extra labour in consequence, and estimated the amount of the damage at about £l2O. The Foreman of Works reported at some length on the damage done by water during the gales., A number of small slips bad occurred in Dampier’s Bay and Hawkburst road. Considerable damage had been caused by the stoppage of drains on the reclaimed land. Slips had also taken place on Governor’s Bay and Sumner roads, blocking them both for a short time. The icost of repairs would he principally in ; carting and labour. The Lighting Committee reported that the Electric Engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Board thought that the proposal of the Council with regard to utilising the electric light for the purpose of lighting (the town, might, on his recommendation, .be favourably considered by the Board.
