THE LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOAR AND SUNDAY OBSERVANCE.

TO THE BDITOB. Sib, —I was very much surprised to see that the Harbour Board, at their meeting yesterday, had passed the following resolution : —“ That, unless under special circumstances of emergency, neither the Harbour Board's pilot staff, nor the steam tug, will be made available to take steamers out on Sunday." The N.Z. Shipping Company's name does not appear in this, but that Company having acceded to the request of the Government to despatch the direct mail from the Colony on Sunday, till—l think— October, it looks very like as if the Harbour Board wished to throw obstacles in the way of the Company, And now. Sir, if the resolution is to remain in force, and if the direct mail steamer is not a “special circumstance of emergency,” what will be the result ? Wellington will be made the last port of departure, and Lyttelton will be deprived of what appears : to be now its only lawful visible means of support, viz., the stores for the voyage (about JI3OO a trip), and the Company’s long list of passengers will collect in Wellington, spending their money in hotels there, while they wait the departure of the steamer. Sir, in these times of depression, every little helps, and I do hope the gentlemen who compose the Board will take the matter again into their consideration, waiving their pious whim for only six months. —I am, &c., SELF HELP.
