BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

An ordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was held at 3 p.m. yesterday;, present—Mr W. Montgomery’(Chairman), the Most Eev the Primate, Hon E. C. J. Stevens, Dr Coward, ilessrs J. D. Enys, T. H. Potts, E. Beetham, E. W; Fereday, P. de C. Malet, J.C.Yeel. - ' PASS'LATIN COUESE. The Chairman said that the narrative of the transactions in reference to the pass Latin course had been sent to Bis Excellency the Governor, and a reply had been received, which he would ask the Eegistrar to read. • . Mr S teaman read the following letter:— “ Government House, “ Wellington, May 16,1885. “ Sir,—l am directed by His Excellency the Governor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of-the 7th instand enclosures with reference to the difficulty which has arisen (between ■ the Senate, of ; the University of New Zealand and the of ’ Governors of Canterbury College with respect to certain plays of Terence, which the Senate has prescribed to be read this year by candidates for B.A.'pass examination; and to inform you that' his Excellency is advised that under present arrangements he is not ip a’position to interfere in the matter.—l have, &c., ■ . “ P. W. Pennbfatheb “ (Private Secretary).” Consideration of the matter was deferred. y • SCHOOL OF AET. A report of the School of Art Committee on a proposed technological course was adopted in tlfe following form: — “After conferring with Mr Blair, and receiving his report, the Committee recommend that" in addition to the work now being done in the school, Mr Blair should deliver a course of lectures on technology, as indicated in his report, pages 9 and 10, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings; Mr Elliott should lake a class out two days in the week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) for sketching from Nature; :Mr Elliott should assist Mr Blair in the preparation of diagrams for his lectures, if required ; the services of Mr Chapman, the present pupil-teacher, to be dispensed,, with, or retained at a cost per annum not exceeding £lO ; Mr Blair wishes the female teachers to teach the female teachers from the Board of Education.” A memorandum was read from Mr Blair, giving a sketch of the work to be gone threugh. He proposed that a course of twelve lectures should be given every term on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 9, when the subject would be divided into three sections, namely (1) The practice of building and construction; (2) the. history of architecture; (3) the plane and solidgeometry of the subject, perspective, &c-, workmgand finished drawings from dimensions, sketches, and specimens. A course of twelve lectures on machine construction •would be delivered every term on Wednesday/'evenings from 7.30 to 9, each lecture ■ being divided into three sections, namely (1) Applied mechanics; (2) the pure 'science connected with practical' work; j(8) the geometry of the subject, projection of shadows, &c. In the last sections of all the lectures sufficient work would be given to keep the students employed without supervision during two following evenings. LEAVE OP ABSENCE. The following reports of the College and Museum Committees were considered in Committee and adopted:— " The College Committee recommends the Board to grant Dr J. von Haast a year’s leave of absence to enable, him to act as -Commissioner to the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, to be held in London in 1886. Also to approve of the proposed arrangement as by letters, dated May 11 and 12, between Professors Hutton and Haaat, that Professor Hutton be authorised to deliver the lectures on geology during Dr Haaat’s absence.” f ' “ The Museum Committee recommends the Board to grant a year’s leave. of absence to the Director to enable him -to visit England as Commissioner to the Colonial Exhibition to be held in London in 1886, provided always that this leave of absence is not to involve any increased expenditure on account of the Museum for' salaries or otherwise.”
