STOCK SALES.

Following on the Metrojwlitan Agricultural Show, came the usuid annual sales of stock. Messrs Wilkin and Co. held their annual sale of stud rams and ewes at their Wool Stores, Hereford street, on Nov. 11. There was a numerous gathering of flock owners, and bidding was fairly brisk. Some very good prices were realised, notably 210 gs and IGOgs, respectively, for two of Mr James Gibson’s merino rams from Belle Vue, Tasmania, the former of which wa§ bought by Mr W. A. Low, of St Helen's, Itanmer Plains. Another ram, bred by Messrs W. Gibson and Son, Tasmania, was knocked down at ISOgs, while another from the same flock fell at llOgs. The highest price obtained for ewes was 2tgs, these animals also coining from Mr James Gibson’s flock, and the purchaser, as before, being Mr W. A. Low. Mr J. T. Matson wielded the hammer. Two days later Messrs- H. Matson and Co. held their own sile at Tattersail’s. The attendance both of buyers and the public was large, though bidding was hardly so brisk fits would have been the case had the times been better. The animals submitted for sale were certainly such as would warrant people in spending money tolerably freely in order to obtain Item. First on the list were the fine South Australian merinos, recently brought over from the well-known estate of Messrs Sanders, James and Co., at Canowie, most of which were knocked down at prices ranging from 10gs to 50gs each for rams, and from 8-lgs to 13gs for ewes. It may be noted, as showing the woolproducing qualities of the Canowie sheep, that a couple of two-year-old rams were shorn daring the day and yielded fleeces weighing respectively - Itiib and 19|lb. The animals had been last shorn in the first week in October, 1883. Pigs ranged from 3 to 7gs. the latter price being given for a York-hire sow bred bv Mr J. Rowe and purchased by Mr T. Merrin. The same price wa s obtained for each of five Berkshire's belonging to Mr J. Harden. Shorthorn bulls sold at from 10, 20,*23, up to lOOgs. This wa s the figure at which Mr TV. Boag bought Rosa’s Earl. 750, N.Z.S.H.B. Ayrshire*! ran from 3 to 10gs, Jerseys and Alderney3 up to the latter figure. * The cows and heifere were taken next day, and the same general remarks are applicable to their sale as to the sheep and bulls. Prices varied from sto 14,1 G and even 25 and SO guineas. On the 14th Messrs Miles’ sale was held, and a fair attendance of genuine buyers resulted. Messrs R. Campbell and Sons’ pure merino rams were in request and fetched up to 30gs. The prices for Berkshire pigs ran to Ulgs from very much lower figures, though, on the who.e. the pigs seemed more in the way of buyers the sheep. On the same day, tae New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company held their sale, when bur prices were realised for Southdowns and Le westers. As for the Wood stock sales which took place on Nov. 15. the bidding at that, on account of Mr Xeaworfchy. was anything but brisk, and few lots changed hands Avery shape! v colt by Albany twin ballacy, after some keen competition, was a gain to Mr K. Lyons at Mignon.by Rorari—•Malice, with foal at foot by Albany» wan knocked down to Mr H. Rrwbason for IGOgs, and the stallion Koran , fell to the nod of Mr Redwood at 90gs. The Middlepark Company’s sale of yearlings took place afterwards, and there was a very large attendant. After everyone had inspected tlio handsome and highly-bred stdliou Apremont, sire of all the youngsters submitted, Mr Tabart took his place in the rostrum. The weather during the last five months has been exceptionally unfavourable to studmasters in Canterbury s but. notwithstanding this drawback, the healthy condition in which all the yearlings were led into the ring* spoke volumes (or the care and attention bestowed upon them by Mr George Cutis. A bay colt by Apremont, out of Miss Flat, fell to Mr G. Q, Stead for 470 gs—the highest price given during the day ; ard a brown colt out of 'Watmjnite to Mr G. Clifford for 3Gogs.
