COMMERCIAL SUMMARY.

Lyttelton Tirnee Office, Tuesday evening, j feinte the departure of the last San j Francisco mail a slightly brisker tone ha# j iwriaded the nu{Kirt market. Considering the interruption to business caused by the lengthened holiday#, the volume of trade has been fairly good, and fully up to the of tho la&t few ißontbit. Iho weather Lately having been of a more favourable character, bo# tended to promote a more active feeling, and with its continuant.* we may look for more extended busm-»h 1« many line# of merchandise, i W*th the of ft few gmau i suspension#, chiefly in the soft good# ! department, trade on the whole, ha# been 1 healthy. Although time# are quiet Mid ; the money market stringent, and bank aivommodatioa firmly controlled, bill# and ! c-ngagem.-iite falling due during the month i hare been taken up with pleoaing promptiriheoring on tlm station# U now in full swing, and the arrivals of wool are 4? very day increasing. Owing to the wet season experienced. It •-* expected that the dip will be m light and clean sw that of laid year. The first of the rone* of local wool sale# have been held, at which nearly the whole of the lot# offered were taken by tho buyer# at price# which are doomed #»tl«faotoiy. The suceodlng auctions come eff on Deo. Iw, whan the various firm* engaged tn the Arode will offer a much larger catalogue. It »# «au»* factory to grower# here that tho London price# ore so well su#talnod. Wool boa ruled ro low in tho Home market* for rowe year# that the present rii*o moanaacon•iderablo item to the income of our community. The shipment# of frozen moat ore steadily Increasing, and the necessity of obtaining a reduction In tho charge* bos \wm tho 8h having made a reduction i» freight. A movement b now on foot amongst the farmer* and other# to doviro placing the moat more readily within tho rwaoh of the KnglWi gaming public, and also endeavour to hnng a reduction in the London dwtributlnfe,

idmrgi’*. The telegram* toporting tho contlnimii<’(> of the improved price* i* encouraging, and him atlmntatoa further and ineroaaing ahipinentn. The area of grain put in this year ha* been considerably out down, Uu* prospect* of the market not having lH*en sudlciontly Inviting, while tho acreage of land laid down to grass ha* Won largely inorensed. Tho Bill giving a bonus to Uw producer* of sugar luwt, to which wo referred in our last summary, has passed successfully through both Houses or Parliament, but whether it will have the desired effect time eon only ohow. The negotiations between the Government and tho Shipping Company for the carriage of mail* by the direct steamers are almost concluded, and the move in this direction has thw hearty concurrence not only of tho commercial section but also of the general public. It will be a* well to point out to our Homo reiulers that correspondence forwarded by tho Brindisi route or the Orient lino is subject to an additional poatago, which is collected on this side. In shipping matters, outside of tho departure of the English steamers there have been tow clearance*. Now that tho wool is coming forward, greater despatch will lie given tho loading of tho Homo vessels. The rates of’freignt for the season have been fixed by the two Companies who do tho bulk of tho carrying, but tho impression exist* that, considering tho number of vessels seeking employment, the prices determined upon are a shade too high. The interprovincial and intercolonial shipping have luscn fairly busy. In merchandise, transaction* have embraced nearly all the items. Teas have had fair sales at mb's which show no change. .Sugars of all grades have been pushed, and holders are accepting very low rates to quit. Dried fruits are selling, and with Christmas noon upon us tho demand should increase. The arrivals of tinned salmon have been heavy, and prizes have largely given way. Coarse and fine salt are both scarce, and prices have advanced considerably. In building materials the shortness of stocks of cement have brought heavy shipments from the neighbouring Provinces. Galvanised iron continues to rule low. In wines and spirits the business has been up to the average. A bettor business has been noticeable in champagnes and claret*. Tho season is favourable for turnip sowing, and largo quantities are being sown. We have nothing of interest to note in connection with the grain market. In wheat there is little doing. The rise reported last mail in oats has been pretty well sustained, but prices recently have become easier. Barley is without alteration, and little or nothing doing in it. The cocksfoot crop looks well, and promises an abundant yield. Stocks of this seed are now exhausted, and the season has virtually closed. The money market is without alteration. For mortgage the rates remain at 74 to 8 per cent, according to nature and amount of h - urity. The supply is more than equal to t ie demand. Malt I‘lqitobs.—Tho demand for bottled ale has been well maintained and fur sales of Bai» bj favourite bottler) have been made. Guinness stoat, both in quarts and pinto ha# sold freelv during the month and shipments 'recently landed have met with a ready sale. Hoi*».—Outside a small business in grocers - parcels, there is nothing doing m either Colonial or imported. Jute Goods. —Sales of woolpacka have been extensive, and tho bulk of the business for the season may now be said to have passed. Transactions in cornsacka should shortly he more frequent, as the arrivals of the yearly shipments may be looked for very shortly. BoinniNO Matkeials. —A quiet market characterises this department. Sales of galvanised iron have been made at X 22 to X 22 10a. Cement has been scarce, but can now be got at ISs 6d to 16s, ex ship. Stocks of American plaster are much beyond requirements. Sheet lead and wire nails are all slow of sale. Paints and Oii*s. —Boiled oil on the spot is scarce, and tho price has advanced fully 2d per gallon. It is now quoted at 3s Cd for invoice lines. Baw is in better supply. Castor bos had enquiry, but not much will transpire until the arrival of the parcels shortly expected from Calcutta. Olive realises to Gd to to 7d. Kerosene sells freely, considering the seaeon. Colza and noatetoot have only bad trade sales. Goockbibs.—With the Christmas season close at hand a larger business will bo elicited in dried fruits. Currants arc selling at Sfd to 54d, and Elomes at s|d to Gd. The smaller lines that come to tho front at tho same time are beginning to have enquiry. Vestas, IUOO’s, are scarce, and command 67« Gd to 68s ; 250's are in full supply. Cocoas are not so much in request, the sale having been curtailed by the warmer weather. Salad oils, owieg to the increased cost, are firmly held tor tho advance. Mustard, pickles, and other oilmen's stores have had fair sorting-up notice. Syrup, considering tho season, has had more than usual notice. Candles are quoted atfl|d to lod for Belmonts, and lOld to 10id for Nationals. Salt, fine, scarce at X 4 10a to X 4 ISs, and coarse equally short at X 4 10s. Carbonate soda and tartaric ooid slow of. sale. Large sales of tobacco have been made. Naifrod of good quality is scarce. Aromatic and fancy sort# continue in good demand, oven at the advanced rates. As usual, at this season, sulphur ha# boon placed at quotations. Caustic and silicate of soda are quiet. Binder twine is now coming into tho market, and a largo trade should shortly eventuate. Heavy contracts have been made with the local makers tor the ensuing harvest. Winks and Spibits. —ln ports and sherries the trade has been moderate. The holiday season produced a comparatively good enquiry for tho best brands of champagne. The quantity sold this season bus exceeded tho consumption of tho same period of last year, Claret# also have had an improved enquiry, while rum ia neglected. Thoagonte of the various cognac firms reporta quiet demand. Whisky has sold more fully than moat spirits. Old Tom, in cask, is dull of sale. J.D.K .Z. ha# pnly bad the ordhury trad a attention.
