CORttRSroNDKKT. j DUNEDIN, Dxc. 1. Considerable disappointment is felt in cricketing circles here at tho abandonment of tho projected Auckland matches, for which our best men have been preparing to got away. In tho Junior Cup match, Phmnix v. Rovers, the latter were dismissed for 16 and 4. In the second innings nine batsmen were dismissed for wit, Cooke took ten wicket* for sight runs, and West nine for eleven run*. UNION RANK v. RANK OP NSW ZEALAND, The annual match between tho above Banks was played yesterday at Hogley Dark, and, as will be seen from the scores below, resulted in a most decided win on the first inning*, for the first-named bank. The Bank of New Zealand having won the tea# elected to bat. A capital wicket was pitched, but with the exception of Strange 40, Somerville 27, and Coughlan 24, none of the champions’did much execution, the total at the end of the innings lasing 147. The Union storied with Bowen and Longden, but it was not until the latter and C, 13. Hamilton bectoc partners that runs came at any pace Daring their partnership 160 runs were added to the score, and it was not till Hamilton placed an easy one in long-off’s h£nds that the two were separated. Tho autgoer made 89 by clean hard hitting. The rift of the Union men did very little, but Lhbgden carried his bat for 115. The scores were as follow; BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. First Eleven, which resulted in a win for the A.C.C. by 26 runs.

A match was played on Saturday last between the Sydenham Youths and the Excelsior Clubs, resulting ia a win for tho former by 40 runs on the first innings. For the latter Curtain batted, and Wilson batted and bowled, well; while, for the former, Robson and Comer batted very well, and Wiltshire and Kobsou did some good bowling. Cricket is coming into fashion and favour in California, thanks to old Colonials and their sons. There are two very flourishing clubs in Sau Pnuujisoo, and one m Grass Valley, Nevada County, a mining town, whore Englishmen prevail, and matches have keen played between visiting teams, attracting considerable attention. Americans are taking an Interest in the noble game, and several have joined the city Clubs, the contests for thntrophies presented for competition by Mr William Greer Harrison, formerly of Auckland, being closely watched. At present Australia is playing all comers. This is the second game of Australia’against the world, with the odds in favour of their winning both. Young New Zealand is represented in the Australian team. A football club has also been formed to play under the Rugby Union rules, but os yet nothing has been done beyond organising. 1 mention this to show that Colonial representatives hold their own in athletic sports on this coast. —Correspondent Otago Daily ‘Tima.
