The Adelaide horses are all here. Warwick and Guesswork are reported to have gone wrong, and are not likely to come to the post. Training is very animated. Mozart went a mile and a half in grand style, and was much fancied, 100 to 12 being taken about him. Bargo and Tremando did a mile and a quarter, the former finishing strongly. Commotion did a tremendous gallop with Lord Wilton. Gratitude was about a hundred yards behind at the mile post, and beat both of them on the second mile post. The Plunger and Hilltop went twice round splendidly, the former finishing strongly. Seahorse did a serviceable gallop. Hippogriff went twice round in fine style, the last mile being done L* Imin 53sec. Plausible, Sandal, Lord Wilton, and Gratitude did useful work. For the Derby, Sandal, Gratitude, Bargo, or Mozart should furnish the winner. NORTH CANTERBURY RACES. This very popular country meeting took place yesterday, but the weather was anything but pleasant. A howling nor’-wester, accompanied with a lot of dust, made everything moot a. Notwithstanding this, iiuTrcTor, fhcio •wjir a large attendance from all parts. Messrs Hobbs and Gocdwin’s totalisator was on the ground, and put through the large amount of £2054. Although the course was slightly rough, the racing was excellent, and the large fields which contested neatly every event added greatly to the success of the meeting. Out of ten acceptors for the Hurdle Handicap, eight horses faced the starter. Comet was made a warm favourite, but disappointed his numerous backers by failing to get a situation. Andy, Gaiters, The Lad, and Secretary, also received a fair amount of support. The winner, however, turned up in Mr Henry’s four yearold gelding Faust, who, it will be remembered, won the Maiden Hurdles at Geraldine. He was then in anything but racing condition, bub in the able hands of Dick Mason, he has since furnished into a really good horse. Leo was second, but on account of running round a post. Gaiters received second money. The District Hurdles produced a field of five, and, after an excellent race, was won by Mr Duncan’s Brian Boru. From nine starters, Betty had all her own way in the Trot, and won easily. For the principal race of the meeting ohly a trio sported silk. A deal of interest was taken from this event by the scratching of Messrs Robinson and Lance’s pair. Vanguard and Nonsense. In the absence of these, Kingask received rather more support than Rubina, who was in excellent condition, and had matters her own way from the fall of the flag. The large field of twelve went to the post for the Farmers’ Plate, which, after a most exciting finish, was won by a neck by Mr Duncan’s filly, by Daniel O’Rorke— Gastille. Mr T. H. Lance’s Sediment ran a very game second, and was capitally piloted by Mr F. Lance. Another trio went out for the Flying Handicap, but notwithstanding the limited field, an interesting race resulted, ending in a victory for Mr Vallaneo’s Kingask. Mr M. Dunam pulled off his third victory of the meeting by appropriating the Ladies’ Purse with Briar. Boru. The Hack Race, won by Mace, and the Consolation, won by Comet, brought a most successful and pleasant meeting to a close. The following are the particulars .
