Olaf Tarsen Olior, belonging to the barque Winona, lying at Makarau, Kaipara, was accidentally killed by being jammed between two logs. He was a native of Norway, 21 yearsold, and has no relations in the Colony. The engineer of the s.s. Macgregor, having declined t/> sign the new articles, the Seamen's Union have obliged the Northern Company to draw out until the demand to raise the pay to current rates has been conceded. Considerable dissatisfaction is felt by the local coal shippers at the unequal way in which Grey shippers are treated as compared with Westport. They ask why they should be charged 3d a ton after the expenditure of XIOO.OOO, while Westport shippers will not begin to pay 3d until X2&0.000 has been expended, thus relieving them of tho tax for several years after Groymouth shippers arc compelled to pay the impost. DUNEDIN, Oct. 30. In a letter to the Star it is stated that owing to the resolution of tho Seamen’s Union, in Sydney, that seamen’s wages be advanced to X 7 per month, the expenditure of tho Union Steamship Company has been increased X3OOO per year. Mr A. C. Strode having resigned his appointment on the University Council, Mr Macandiew, M.H.R., has been appointed. At the Harbour Board to-day a further month’s leave of absence was granted to the Chairman of the Board (Mr A. 11. Ross, M.H.R.); and a motion was passed thanking him for bis action on behalf of the Board in Parliament. A meeting is called for to-morrow to take steps to celebrate the Wycliffe quincentenary. During the summer coaches will run between Lakes Wakatipu and Wanaka, enabling tourists to do botlf lakes. Hitherto, owing to want of communication, Wanaka, which has the finest scenery, has rarely been visited.
