Educational. THE EDUCATION BOARD OF THE DISTRICT OF NORTH CANTERBURY. SCHOLARSHIPS. NOTICE is hereby (riven that Ten Scholarships, oftho annua! value of Forty Pounds each, and tenable for two years, will bo awarded upon examination in the month of June next, and shall he open to all children wh« have attended regularly any publie school under tho Board from the commencement of the December quarter previous to the date of examination j provided that children attending (secondary schools, who have held any of tho Hoard's Bcholarshix>s, may compete In Classes C, D., and E. Tho scholarships shall be as follows ■.— (a) Two scholarships open to children whoseage docs not exceed eleven years on the first day of June or the year in which the scholarships are given. (b) Two scholarships open to those whose age doea not exceed twelve years on the first of June. (c) Two scholarships open to those whore age docs not exceed thirteen ymars on the first of June. (d) Two scholarships open to those whose age does not exceed fourteen years on the first of June. (B) One scholarship open to those whose age does not exceed fifteen years on the first of June. And one scholarship to be applied to the three classes A., 8., and C, according to the r«wpective merit of tho candidates in these classes. "Winners of scholarships in any yoar shall not be allowed to compete in the year following, unless they first resign the scholarships previously gained. Candidates must enter their names by giving notice in their own handwriting to the Chairman of the Board on or before the tenth day of Slay, in every case stating the day and year of birth, and the school at which the candidate is receiving instruction. The Board will not publish the name of the school from which a candidate comes without the consent of the principal teacher of the school, which may be sent with the notice of entry. The Board reserves the right of requiring proof as to age. The examinations will beheld in Christchurch, beginning on Tuesday, the third day of June, for Classes A, B, and C; and on Tuesday, the tenth day of June, for Classes D and E. Necessary expenses of travelling and of board and lodging will be defrayed by the Board. The subjects in which candidate;:! are examined, and the maximum number of marks assigned to the various subjects, shall be as follows : Classes A, B, C—Reading, 50 ; Writing, 50 ; Spelling, {0 ; Arithmetic, 100; English Grammar and Composition, 100; Geography, 100; British History, 100 ; Elementary Science, 100. Class D. English, 150; Arithmetic, 100; Geography (physicil and political), 60; History (British and Ancient), 100; Mathematics—Euclid Book 1., and Algebra so far as to include simple equations of one unknown, 100 ; Elementary Science, 100; French, Grammar, and easy translation and Composition, 80 ; Latin, Principia Latina, Part 1., and a portion of an easy author [Csesar de Bello Gallico, Bk. 1., chapter 30 to end], 100. Class E.—English, 150; Arithmetic, 80 ; History, (British and Ancient), 100 ; MathematicsEuclid, Books 1., 11., 111., and Algebra so far as to include easy quadratics, 120 ; Elementary Science, 100; French, Grammar, and easy translation and Composition, 100; Latin, Grammatical questions, a very easy piece of continuous prose for translation into Latin, selected portions of one prose and one verse author [Virgil, iEneid, Bk. I. ; Cicero deSehectute], 130. A scholarship will not be awarded to any candidate who has not obtained twenty-five per cent of the possible number of marks in each subject, and fifty per cent of the possible total. J. V.
