Betting: 5 to 2 agst Le Grand, 5 to 1 agst Empress, G to 1 agst Pell Mell, 10 to 1 agst Sardonyx, 12 to 1 agst Sweet "William, Nonnanby, and Morpeth, 14 to 1 agst Martini-Henry, First Demon, and Here's Luck, 10 to 1 agst King of the Vale, 20 to 1 each ngst Favo and Phyllis. In a light drizzling shower, Mr Gannon marshalled his forces at the post, and he did not Ireop the. spectators long in suspense, for taking advantage of a favourable opportunity, he dropped his flag to a capital start, and Here's Luck at once shot to the front, and cut out the work at a capital pace, Phyllis, Old Gold, First Demon, and Favo being his immediate attendants. Here's Luck forced the pace up the hill, and along the bend, Old Gold close at his side, and a length away were Favo and Phyllis, abiut a dozen others being closehy bunched; amongst these was Martini-Henry, who was lifted off his legs, and fell. Morpeth, who was in the rearmost division, stumbled over him, and coming down, broke his off foreleg badly, and Power's shoulder-blade was fractured. Le Grand was interfered with in the scrimmage, and dropped to the rear. Here's Luck and Old Gold had in the meantime led the others into the straight, and they ■were first past the stand, First Demon, Favo, Stoekdale and Norinanby all lying handy, while King of the Yale, Le Grand, and Little Sister were acting as whippersin. No material alteration occurred as they rounded the turn and ran along the back stretch, but rising the hill Le Grand improved his position, and Pell Mell made a run towards the front. Here's Luck was first up the hill, but Old Gold now began to betray symptoms of distress, and j est before reaching the three furlong post Favo assumed command, and led round the home turn, at which point Le Grand made a bold bid for victory and ran into second place, only to give way to Empress, who made a determined eifort at the distance, and got within a length of the light weight. Here Le Grand made another bold effort, but it was an expiring one, and Empress was left in attendance upon Favo, Sardonyx coming with his customary rush ; but the light weight served Favo, who sailed along without much effort, and won by two lengths, a neck separating Empress and Sardonyx, next to whom came Normanby, Here's Luck, Le Grand, King of the Vale, Sweet William, Phyllis, Pell Mell, and Little Sister ; the last to pass the post being Polestar, Soldier Boy, Old Gold, and Young Australian. Time —3min 3Csec. The Christchurch hounds met again at Southbridge on Tuesday morning. The sport appears at every succeeding meet to be more eagerly followed, and on Tuesday morning the township had a very pretty appearance. The followers of "John Peel," among whom there was a fair sprinkling of ladies, both riding and driving, mustered to the number of 40 or more. About 11 o'clock a start wa3 made to Trjphook'i- part of the Be Wield estate, which Sir Campbell had very kindly allowed them to draw. A hare was soon found, and a merry run of about twenty minutes, during which some fairly stiff country had to be negotiated terminated in a kill close to Mr Gabbie's farm. The master, Captain Cotton, was invited by this gentleman to go over his place. The offer was gladly accepted, and in the first paddock the gladsome muaic of the hound proclaimed a find. A capital run ensued, during which there were a few spills, but none serious, with the exception of Mr Houston, whose horse stumbled and fell, throwing him heavily to the ground. He was cut badly about ths face, and injured internally. The run lasted about half an Hour, the hounds keeping the line the whole time, and pass was eventually killed m the North Eakaia road. Mr Gabbie then invited all to luncheon, and his hospitality was greatly appreciated. Heavy rain a* this point began to fall, and the master wnsely decided to turn for home. Amongst those outriding were Miss Cryer and four other ladies, Messrs W. Woodman, on Mousetrap, J. C. Hanna on Slim Jim, C. WRESTLING MATCH BETWEEN MILLER AND DONALD DINNIE. On April 19 the two renowned athletes, champions of the old and new worlds, met in a wrestling match at Melbourne. Miller chose the Graeo-Eoinan style, and Dinnio the Scotch style, three falls apiece, the majority of falls to decide the match. The result showed that in his own style each man was more than a match for the other. There was an enormous attendance, and the crowd took the utmost interest in the struggle between the two athlete 3. They each won two falls, but in a supreme effort to turn Dinnie on his back in the fifth encounter Miller, though successful, dislocated his ankle, and broke one of the small bones. The match thus resulted in a draw. FOOTBALL. This year the Rugby Union have appropriated the first Saturday in every month for a Union match, the sides in which will

be composed of players selected from all the Clubs. These matches, it is hoped, will accustom the men who form Interprovincial Fifteens to playing together better than a hurriedly arranged trial match, and will also give ample opportunity to discover any new players of ability. The first game takes place at Lancaster Park on Saturday. The players engaged, whose names will be found beiow, are the pick of eight Clubs, and a very good tussle ought to be the result.
