CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB.

The members of the Canterbury Rowing Club met last night, at the Commercial Hotel, in order to distribute to the various winners the prizes gained during the season just closed. There was a very good muster, and Mr L. M. Ollivier, Captain of the Club, presided. The custom of the Club heretofore has been for the Committee to select the trophies, but this year each winner was presented with an order for the amount of the prize he had gained, so that he might select some piece of plate or article of jewellery to suit his own taste. The cockswains’ prizes, however, had been purchased by tho Committee, and were displayed on the table at the gathering last evening. It may be mentioned that tho total value of the prizes gained by the Club during the season is £99, of which £55 10s has been devoted to the purchase of trophies for the members of the winning crews. Harman, President of the Club, and of tho successful and, unsuccessful competitors, wore then drunk with tho customary honours. Mr J. 0. Jones, on behalf of tho members of tho Club, then made a presentation to Mr L M. Ollivier, who is about to proceed to Auckland. In doing so Mr Jones said that tho members of tho Club could nqjj allow Mr Ollivier, who had been them captain for several years, to go away without showing him that they appreciated his services and valued him as a personal friend. He alluded to the prowosa Mr

Ollivier had shown on several occasions, and to the satisfactory manner in which ho had performed the duties of his position, and concluded by requesting him to accept, a handsome spirit stand, with bottles of cut glass, and a good field glass, which had been subscribed for by the members of the Club.

Mr Ollivier, who was considerably affected, thanked the members in a few very appropriate words, expressing his gratification at having received so handsome a present, and his grief fit having to leave friends whom he had known for so many years. Mr Ollivier’s health was drunk with musical honours and three times three. Several songs were sung during the evening, and a very pleasant time was spent.
