At tho Ashburton Athletic Sports Ground, on Monday evening, a foot race came olf between two local pedestrians, for .£ls a-sido. The runners were Kenny and Betts. Kenny ran against Darcy Hyland some days ago, but unsuccessfully, and Betts has won several events at local sports. On Monday the contestants ran three heats—viz., 100 yards, 200 yards, and 300 yards. In the 100 yards heat, Betts was allowed three yards’start; he got six yards’ start at 200, and nine yards at 300. Tho first heat was tho 100 yards, and this Betts won by about half-a-yard; in tno other two heats Kenny was an easy winner. Mr A. Harrison acted as starter, getting the men away very satisfactorily ; and Messrs Davison and Leggott were the judges. A good deal of money changed hands on the running. RIFLE MATCH. The Christ’s College Rifles have accepted the challenge of the College Cadets to fire a rifle match, and the competition will take place on the Hillsborough range this afternoon, weather permitting.
