KAIAPOI ELECTORATE.

On Saturday a deputation, representing the Kaiapoi, Rangiora, and Woodend electors, waited upon the Hon E. Richardson, in connection with the election to fill the extraordinary vacancy in the Kaiapoi electorate, caused by the retirement of Mr Isaac Wilson. Two requisitions were presented, bearing upwards of 340 signatures; requesting that Mr Richardson would allow himself to be put in nomination, and giving pledges that the utmost efforts would be used to secure his return. In reply to a question, the Hon E. Richardson explained what action he had taken in connection with the temperance question. He had supported the 1873 Permissive Bill, introduced by Sir William Fox. He had also given his support to the present Act as far as the compensation question, on which he had stood out, holding that if licensed houses were abolished, compensation ought to be given. The questioner considered that this was quite as far on the Temperance side as Mr Saunders had gone. That gentleman’s name had been put forward because it was thought that Mr Richardson was opposed to Temperance legislation. The Hon E. Richardson expressed his willingness fo accede to the requisitions. The deputation sissured Mr Richardson that, in the event of opposition to his candidature, they would form Committees and canvass the whole district. The proceedings then terminated.
