EXPENDITURE ON RAILWAYS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—l extract the following from the Timea' city article of March 3, in which the letter appears. The statement is officially compiled by Mr Edward Grovffle, of the Registrar-General's Office, Sydney. "New South Wales owes England £18,721,219. Of this sum we have expended—on railways, jei3.304.540j on water supply. .£1,074,480 j on sewerage, £310,350; on public works, on formations, .£309,389; on immigration, •£411,400,- to make good the loss sustained in the negotiation of various loans, Je450,000. Tho annual interest on this 18| millions amounts to J 837.129. Now, let us look at tho credit eido. The not railway revenue amounts to £787,294, leaving a sum of only .£49,835 to be made up from the consolidated fund, to pay tho interest on the public debt of Now South Wales. When the New Zealand public considers that the railway tariff of Now South Wales is, and has been, lower than that which has prevailed hero, it may well exclaim to the present and past Ministries, who have had and spent .£30,000,000, " Where be my milliona, Varus ?'»—l am, &c, ' OLD BOOTS.
