SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.

[By Telegraph.] [from otje special bepoetee.] TIMAEU, Apbil 25. The second and concluding day of this meeting opened under the most auspicious circumstances, the weather being beautifully fine. The attendance was larger than on Thursday, and although the fields were limited the racing throughout was good, and the finishes in most events closely contested. Mr Meikle gave every satisfaction in starting, and must be complimented on the manner in which he despatched all his fields during the meeting, and great praise must be given to Mr F. W. Cook, the energetic Secretary, for the way he undertook his onerous duties. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin's twc totalisators put through .£2956 during the day, which brings the total amount for the meeting up to .£5390. Derritt made himself very conspicuous by the excellent jockeyship he displayed in winning all the flat races on the card. During' the two days he has had eight mounts and been successful on no less than seven occasions, which is the best performance yet shown at any important meeting in New Zealand. Sport commenced with the Steeplechase, which produced the good field of seven. The two well-known veterans, Clarence and The Agent, were the only horses, with the exception of Eona, who took all their jumps without mishap. When two miles had been covered, Eona shot his bolt, and Clarence and The Agent then had the race to themselves, and after i grand finish, the former, who was excellently ridden, won by a neck. Only four accepted for the Jockey Club Handicap, and Vanguard was made a warm favourite, while Sou'-Wester and Tasman were well supported. Again that most constant horse Tasman showed his gameness, and carried his 9st 61b to victory with a bit in hand, ,Sou'-Wester running a good second. The Selling Eace proved an easy win for Mokarakara, but had Billy been run out, he would most probably have given Derritt some trouble at the finish. Eubina gamely carried off the Winter Oats Handicap, notwithstanding her crushing weight, and Minerva, who appeared to have the race weH in hand at the distance, completely shut up when collared a few strides from the post. The Hack Hurdle Eace was a chapter of accidents, as all fell except Steeldust and Milo, and had the latter been ridden judiciously he should have won. Only three faced the starter for the Consolation, which fell to Hippodamia, but had not Derritt been in the saddle, Billy must have pulled it off. This brought the meeting to a close. The following are the details of the day's racing :-- Handicap Steeplechase of 100 sovs, with sweep of 3 sovs to go to second horse. Two miles and a half. Mr J. Pilbrow's b g Clarence, aged, 12st 121 b (Lnnu) 1 Mr P. Butler's ch g The Agent, aged, 12st 41b (Lyford) 2 Mr W. S. Betting: Even on Clarence, 3 to 1 agst The Agent, 5 to 1 Black Doctor. Before the flag fell Encore bolted for some distance, and when the lot were sent on their journey Eona went to the front and cut out the running. All jumped well till the stone wall was reached, at which Black Doctor made a mistake, and was not afterwards persevered with. Eona still held a good lead, and at the- double across the road was about ten lengths ahead of Encore, after whom came Fawn, The Agent, Clarence, and Karearea in that order. Coming over the double back into the course Lyford brought The Agent up and collared Eona, but the latter again went to the front, and led The Agent by three lengths, Clarence being close up. Half a mile from home Eona fell back, and Clarence and Agent took the next fence together, but Fawn, who was going strongly, camo to grief, giving Burgess a severe shaking. At tho last obstaolo, The Agent had slightly the advantage, and came into the straight with Clarence on his quarters. A grand struggle then ensued, both Lunn and Lyford ruling their hardest, but Clarence was a bit too good for The Agent, and boat lmu on the post by a neck, Eona third, and Encore fourth.
