AUCKLAND, April 25. At a meeting of the City East Licensing Committee to-day, it was decided to grant a transfer of license in the case of what is known as the Wandering Waverley, which has been made the subject of so much litigation. The Chairman said the previous Committee had made an error, and the present Committee declined to perpetuate it.

At a meeting of the Northern Steamship Company, the report was satisfactory, and a dividend was declared for the half-year at the rate of 10 per cent. A now steamer is being built to replace the Glenelg in the Tauranga, Eussell, and Auckland trade, which will be launched from the Clyde this month. An order has also been sent for a light dr.iuiju; twin-screw steamer for stock carrying, intended for Waitara and the West Coast; to be thoroughly well ventilated and fitted with a chamber for freezing meat. Both steamers are expected here in Septembor.

TAURANGA, Apbil 25. Instructions have been received from the contractor in London to commence the survey of the Tauranga, East Coast, and Hot Lakes District Railway.

WAtfGANUI, Apeil 25. The first annual meeting of the newlyformed Caledonian Society was held to-day ontheracecourse. A special half-holiday was declared in town, tho schools also being closed. An adjourned public mooting of householders was hold to-night to consider tho action of tho Education Board in abolishing District lligh Schools in Wanganui. The attendance was not very large, but a number of lengthy speeches were delivered, and a motion passed condemning tho action of the Board and requesting it to reconsider its decision. Gossott is gazetted an additional public vaccinator for the Ellesmoro district. Mr M. Lynskey is appointed return-ing-Officor for Kaiapoi. DUNEDIN, April 25. During tho explosion at Owake powder mills, tho clothes of the keeper, William Mold, caught fire, but ho had the presence of mind to jump into the water-race, and so extinguished the flames. Tho upper part of his body, principally the chest and arms, was severely burned, and he had his collar-bone broken by Borne timber falling on him. Tho mill building was completely shattered by the explosion. Work was only resumed at the mill three weeks ago, after effecting the repairs necessitated by the previous explosion. Mold was brought to Dunedin Hospital. A peculiar assault case has been heard at Balclutha. George Mitchell met Miss Campbell, a pupil teacher, coming home from school, and slapped her on both cheeks, struck her a severe blow on the forehead with hjs fist, knocked her hat off, and made her nose bleed, exclaiming at the same time, " Youbrute, I will kill you." Mitchell alleged that Miss Campbell had severely punished his daughter, and that meeting her he lost his temper and boxed her ears. He was fined. M and costs.

At a public meeting to-night, it was arranged to start a co-operative store, and a Committee was appointed. At a meeting of the Committee of the recently appointed Constitutional Eeform Association, Captain Baldwin was elected Chairman. It was., resolved to hold a public meeting shortly. A four-roomed house belonging to Patrick Russell, at Kew, near Caversham, was burned down this morning. The building was insured for .£250 in the Union, and the furniture for .£SO in the same office.
