The New Zealand Shipping Company 8 ship Bakaia was docked yesterday to be cleaned aud The barque Eialto was towed into the stream yesterday afternoon. She has a cargo of gram, shipped by the New Zealand Grain Agency, and -will most probably leave towlay for the Channel for orders. , . The Union Steamship Company s steamer Manapouri arrived from Melbourne, via Hobart and Southern pqrts, yesterday morning, and left for Auckland and way ports in the afternoon. The Union Steamship Company's steamer Mahinapua aiyifed from West Coast ports and Wellington yesterday morning, with a cargo of cool, which she tranships to the ship Wellington. Considerable interest having been taken in London as to the probable passages of the steamers Borne and Tongariro, the following particulars, taken from their reports, appearing in the Mel-, bourne and Dunedin papers, may prove useful:— The P. and O. boat left London on Feb. 28, passing the Isle of Wight on Feb. 29. The New Zealand , Shipping Company's boat left on Feb. 29, and took her linal departure from Plymouth on March 2. Both steamers passed Gibraltar on March 4 and 6 respectively, arrived at Port Said on March 11 and : 14, left Suez on March 14 and 16, left Aden on March 18 and 21, and passed the Leuwin on April 8 and 7. The Eome reached Melbourne on April 14, and the Tongariro arrived at Hobart tl.e previous day. It must be borne in mind, however, that the Kome had to moke a detour in order to call at Colombo, while the Tongariro came direct from Aden to Hobart. Mails by the latter reached here on April 18, and those by the Eome on April 23. The latter leaves Melbourne again for London on May 8. A. fresh instance of the strange efficacy of oil to calm a heavy sea has occurred in the case of a steamer engaged in the Colonial trade. This was , the Jane Mayer, bound to Newfoundland for the seal fishery, which was driven back to Lerwick ; after leaving Dundee. She had met a terrific '■ hurricane, in which the ship was thrown on her ' beam ends. Green seas broke over, and it was, for a moment, feared that she would founder. But the captain tried the device of the oil. Three bags, filled with oakum and saturated with oil, were hung over the ship's side. The effect was marvellous. The sea ceased to break over the deck, and presently went down. The importance of this new proof of the results oil produces cannot be overrated. It is evident that a small quantity will suffice, and the process is extremely simple. The effect, no doubt/of using the oakum bags was that the application was gradual, and the oil had a longer time to act on the troubled waters. TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD. Aebivals. April 25 -.
