ROAD BOARDS.

EICCAETON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday ; present—Messrs Hall (Chairman), Nun week, Boag, and Stanley. —A deputation from ratepayers of the Avon Eoad District interviewed the Board for the purpose of ascertaining whether the Board approved of the annexation to Eiccarton of that portion of the Avon district north of the Styx. Mr Johns, on behalf of the deputation, furnished a list of sixty ratepayers, with the amount of their assessments and other information, and stated that- they would sign a petition for severance from the Avon district. The Chairman stated that the matter rested entirely with the ratepayers and the County Council, as by clause 7 of “The Eoad Boards Act Amendment Act, 1883,” it was necessary that a petition signed by twothirds of the ratepayers of the portions of the districts affected must be presented to the Council. The deputation thought this could readily be done, and having thanked, the Board, withdrew. —The following correspondence was read: —From the County Council, requesting to be furnished with a list of alterations in the names on the roll for the current year. Eeferred to the Clerk.—Prom Mr Bruce, referring to a petition recently forwarded to the Board, asking for a footpath on the Fendalton road. It was resolved to reply that m consequence of the existing drain, and the narrowness of the road, a. path could not he made with safety.— Prom. Mr. Horner, asking that the road leading to Clearwell be gravelled, as there was a large quantity of produce to be carted over it. The Board requested Mr Nun week and the Surveyor to examine the road, and see if shingle could be procured in -‘file neighbourhood.—From the Spreydon Eoad Board (in reply) declining to take action in the diversion of the Lincoln and Eiccarton Junction road past the Lunatic Asylum. It was resolved to forward the letter to the Inspector in Lunacy.—Prom Messrs Hay, Howesou, ami others, asking the Board to form Church street, Peerswick. The Surveyor was directed to see the petitioners, and to report to Chairman.—Prom Messrs Hetherington and Pester calling attention to the bad state of the upper portion of the Sawyers’ Arms road. The Board directed the Surveyor to repair the road on completion of the present gravel contract. —Prom Mr Parker, requesting that the footpath in Picton road be gravelled before winter. It was resolved to comply witb :he request.—Prom Mr Haslam, calling attention to the condition of Wakefield road, Peerswick. Eeferred to Surveyor to report. —From the Property Tax Commissioner, stating that all the necessary information as to lands alienated from the Crown would be furnished by the Commissioner of Crown Lands. From the Board of Conservators, advising as to the rate proposed to bo levied for the ensuing year, and thanking the collector for the prompt way in which the rates have been collected for the past year. — Prom Mr Wilfred Badger, enclosing circular in reference to the “ Whole Law of New Zealand,” and asking the Board to become a subscriber to tbe work. The Clerk was directed to order a copy.—From Mr Claridge, requesting an extension of time for the completion of his contract. Granted to April 31.—From Mr Joseph Hill, calling attention to the want of drainage near his house. Eeferred to Surveyor.—Prom the Avon Eoad Board, enclosing copy of resolution passed at a meeting of ratepayers of the Avon district, in reference to drainage matters, and requesting that a joint deputation of the Kiccarton and Avon Eoad Boards attend on the Drainage Board with a view to the settlement of the questiou. It was resolved to reply that a deputation from this Board would moot the Avon Eoad Board at the next meetiug of the Drainage Board. —Applications for permission to take a few loads of gravel for private use from the Board’s reserve were received from Messrs Higham and Cartwright, and granted. Mr° Taylor wrote, stating that unfisreseen circumstances prevented his attendance at the meeting, and asking to he excused. Granted.—A letter was received from the City Council, arranging for a conference of local bodies within the drainage area, to take into consideration matters connected with the Drainage Board, such meeting to be held at the City Council April 2-1. The Chairman and Mr Nimwoek were delegated to attend the meeting on behalf of" the Board.—Tenders for the formation of the now road through the Ham property were received, and referred to the agents for the property (Messrs Harman and Stevens) for consideration and acceptance.—The Clerk produced the balancesheet and accounts to March 31, audited and certified as correct by the district Auditor. The rate account showed the amount of rates outstanding to be 8s 2d. — It was resolved to hold the annual meeting on May 2, and the eleetiou on May 7. —The Surveyor’s report was road and approved. —Accounts having been passed for payment, the Board adjourned.
