The China papers comment on the circumstance that, “ owing to the deplorable condition of the money market,” consequent upon the unsettled state of political affairs and the probability of war, several Chinese bankers have committed suicide by taking large doses of opium. Their despair is stated bo have been due in part to the severity of the law towards defaulting debtors in a country where Bankruptcy Acts are unknown. Madame Wolkenstein, a well - known Nihilist, who was recently arrested, is said to be one of the sisters of a lady celebrated for her beauty who has for some time been engaged in the Nihilist propaganda. She is also suspected of having carried on a correspondence with Prince Krapotkine. One of her sisters has already been trans--1 ported to Siberia, and a second is atpresent under examination.
