ROAD BOARDS.

WEST BYBETON. At tho last monthly mooting of the above Board there wore present —Messrs Addinell (Chairman), Sheat and Smith. The Surveyor's report was read and adopted.—The following letters wore read :--From Messrs Chapman Brothers, requesting to bo allowed to erect two panels of fencing on each side of tho Tram road, and a gate, also, on tho Ohoka road. Mr Chajmian attended, and stated it was intended to erect the gates and fence of sawn timber in a proper manner, and paint them white. Mr Sheat proposed, and Mr Smith seconded—“ That Messrs Chapman Brothers’ request be granted, on the understanding that all responsibility for accidents rests with Messrs Chapman Brothers.” Carried. Mr Chapman agreed with the above resolution, and then complained of the fords made on each side of the Tram and Ohoka roads, on Chapman’s boundary road. The Chairman agreed to meet Mr Chapman, to determine any cause of complaint, some day after a heavy rain. —Mr J. Doggett applied for increased accommodation in the cottage occupied by him at-tho office, and offering to pay an increa|ed rent. Mr Sheat proposed, and Mr Smith seconded —“ That a lean-to be added the whole length at the back, and, when the work was completed tho rent to be raised to 4s per week.” Carried.—Mr B. L. Higgins complained of the damage done to his fence by the water being diverted down tho side of the Tram road, instead of taking its proper course. Tho Chairman undertook to accompany the Surveyor, and report at the next meeting.—From Mr W. Badger, stating that he was going to publish a book of the whole law of New Zealand.—Mr Smith proposed, and, Mr Sheat seconded—- “ That tho annual meeting be held at noon on Friday, May 2.” Carried.—The Return-ing-Offlcer stated that nominations for the election of two members would be received up to noon on Monday, April 28, and the election take place, if necessary, on Tuesday, May 6.—The Chairman reported that tenders for fords had been sent in as directed on March 24, and that of Edward M'Gowan accepted for the one at Sheafs.gate, on the North Eyre road, for £1 15s, and that of Fred Smith, for ,£8 each, on North Eyre road (at Graham’s), Bissetfs, and Chapman’s boundary roads.—Accounts, amounting to JJ2llOs, were passed, and ordered to be paid.

LITTLE RIVER. A meeting pf this Board was held on April 17; present—Messrs Gehbie (Chairman), Edmonds and Radford. Correspondence was received: —Erom the Akaroa County Council, refusing the Board’s second appeal for payment of part of the cost of erecting Streeter’s bridge.—From same, forwarding copy of County electoral roll for this riding, requesting any necessary alterations to be forwarded. Clerk, informed that he had done so to the extent that section 10 of the Rating Act permitted alterations in the roll by local bodies.— From School Committee, Tai Tapu, requesting some repairs may be effected on footbridge at Tai Tapu. Clerk to attendto the matter.—From Mr G. R. Joblin, requesting that an obstruction, in the shape of a “peripatetic” boarding-housekeeper, alleged to be on a road near Lake Forsyth, may be ordered off, Resolved—“ That while regretting that Mr Joblin should be inconvenienced by the obstruction complained of, the Board do not see its way to take action in the matter, as, in the first place, they are not aware that the alleged obstruction is actually on a road, they have never given any permission for it to be there, and thly understand it will only remain during the short time the present railway contract continues. —From Property Tax Commissioner re Crown lands alienated from the Crown during the past year.—From Mr W. Badger, requesting an order for a copy of a book of New Zealand Laws.—From Messrs Stocks and Wallace, railway con-' tractors, requesting permission that their men may camp on an unused road at Harmon’s Bay, as they could not make arrangements with Mr Joblin, who is owner of the land in that vicinity. The Board regretted being unable to ‘ comply with this request, but, not wishing to obstruct the contractors in carrying out their contract, the Board will not interfere as long as the public thoroughfare is not interfered with or obstructed.— From Messrs Johnston, Wood and Co. requesting that some steps may be taken to improve the state of the Drain road at Little River. It was resolved—“ That Messrs Johnston, Wood and Go. be informed that tenders are now invited to cart 1530 yards of shingle on same.” — From Mr A. Lyon requesting that he may be permitted the use of timber on the road leading to his farm in Price’s Yale, for which he would guarantee to put the road in partial repair. Clerk to visit and report what timber there is and what repairs necessary.—From Provincial Auditor appointing a day for auditing Board’s accounts. The Clerk reported the accounts audited, and laid them open for inspection.—From the Chamber of Commerce inviting a deputation from the Board to the meeting held at Christchurch on the railway tariff. —From South Waimakariri ' Board of Conservators, intimating that a rate of l-32nd part of a penny in the £ had been levied by that body on that part of this district under its jurisdiction. From Messrs Stocks and Wallace, railway contractors, requesting permission to use stuff from roadside for making railway embankments. Resolved—“ That the Board have no objection, provided no injury is done to the road, or obstruction caused.”—From the. Engineer for Constructed Railways, refusing to make a level crossing where the line goes into the shingle pit at the spit. Tt was resolved that this Board persist in its claim in this matter, as a public road is marked off where the said crossing has been asked for.—Mr George Robertson waited on the Board, requesting compensation for damage done to the part of the Native Reserve through which shingle had been carted by the Board. The Clerk informed the Board that he had duly served the necessary notice in compliance with section 90, sub-section 12, Public Works Act, 1882, on all the trustees of the Native Reserve. Mr Robertson was tendered iil 10s, being half the amount of his claim, in full payment for all the damage done. Amount accepted.—With regard to the approaches requested to be made at Rabbit Island Railway Station, the Clerk reported having met the Inspector of Railways by appointment, and learned that only a crossing was intended to be made by way of filling in the ditch leading from the main road j that a plan of what the Board considered a suitable approach had been given to the Inspector; and it was now that the Government bo again requested to make an approach in some such form as shown on the said plan.—With regard to the sawdust nuisance at Little River, it was resolved that the Constabulary be instructed to take any necessary steps to comply with the Public Health Act in this matter if the notice served by the Board is not carried out by the mill owners.—Resolved that tenders be invited to cart all the metal broken at Little River, as well as 1000 yards of shingle from the river bed, and-have same spread on the main road at Little River, tenders to bo in not j tllau A P ri l 28, the Board to meet on that day to consider same.—lt was resolved '“at an election of two members be held on May 6, and for the sake of the public convenience, that the annual meeting of ratepayers be held on the same day. —After passing accounts -for payment, the Board adjourned. r J
