[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, April 22, At Palmerston Races to-day Mr Kenyon’s Nerora fell and died in the Shag Valley Handicap. She had won the Palmerston Cup, and ran second in the District Handicap previously/ and looked likes winning the Handicap. Cotton was riding her, and escaped without injury. The mare did not move after she fell. RIFLE MATCH The Sydenham Eiflea bavins challenged the City Guards to a rifle match, the challenge has been accepted, and the match will take place on Saturday. The terms are eight men a side ; ranges, 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. The following ore the representatives of the City Guards: —Captain Wolfe, Lieutenant Francis, Sergeant Aulsebrook, Sergeant Cahill, Corporal Hull, Corporal Parkes, Private Lavery, Private Balfour ; emergencies—Private Eanby, Private Dearsley, Private Hall; scorer— Lieutenant Gurnett. FOOTBALL. The Merivale Football Club will hold a practice on Cranmer Square this evening at 5.30; after which two teams will he chosen to represent the Club against Lincoln College, at Lincoln, and Richmond on the Merivale ground. All players are invited to the practice. CRICKET. The season at Wellington was wound up last Saturday with a match between the Opera Company and the Amateur Dramatic Company, which was remarkable for the fact that one of the former team scored the first century ever made on the ground. The local men only totalled 35, hut the professionals succeeded in running up 177 for four wickets, W. Fordo 101 not out. He finished up the day’s play by a big hit for a clean run 8. Forde did some very good wicket-keeping in the matches which the “ Patience ” and other companies played here about two years ago.
