The mail steamer Kome arrived bn Monday morning, having on board a young lady. Miss Kermode, who had been suffering from an attack of sinall-pbx, but who was now better. The arrangements made by the Central Board of Health completely miscarried, and for eight hours a complete dead-lock ensued, both medical men at the Quarantine Station declining to board the vessel in consequence of their incomplete instructions. Eventually the patient was examined, and the passengers wore ordered into quarantine for fourteen days. Mr Withers, the P. and 0. Company’s Superintendent, formally protested against the groat delay in landing the mails. Dr Youl, Chairman of the Central Board of Health, is of opinion that Miss Kermodo has not been suffering from small-pox at all. ..... More than twenty claims for compensation have been already sent into the Government by tho sufferers in tho Little River railway accident. NEW SOUTH WALES. Sir Alfred Stephen, Lieutenant - Governor of the Colony, is Acting-Governor during Lord Loftus’ visit to Norfolk island. The sculling match between Trickotfc and Beach on Saturday, excited considerable interest, as it is expected that the winner will row Hanlan. Large numbers of spectators were present. Beach had an easy win, Trickett never being able to extend him. Both men were in splendid condition. It is thought probable also that Laycock, who is now all right, will challenge Hanlan. The Volunteer encampment at Windsor Farm was a great success. Over 2000 men wore present. Arrangements have been made for Hanlan to row Beach on the Parramatta river for £oN a-side and tho Championship of the World.

QUEENSLAND. The libel case against the Brisbane Courier has been concluded. The jury, after a few minutes’ retirement, returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty. Justice Harding entirely coincided with the verdict and failed to see how a jury could have come to any other conclusion. He regretted that he could not give costs against the Government. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Parliament meets during the first week in June. ' The second hatch of nominations for the Assembly has been made. Mr Glyde, the Treasurer, who was defeated for Victoria, is not renominated. There is vague talk of the formation of a coalition Ministry. Great preparations are being made for the inauguration of a Grand Lodge of Freemasons. A telegram has been received from the foreman of the Veil-boring party at Tarkanina, 60 miles north of Farina, stating that the party after three years’work have struck good water at a depth of 1220 ft. The discovery is considered very important.
