TRAINING NOTES

July and Mataku were the first to work on Saturday, the latter going once round at his best pace, but July was not put to any great exertion. Tasman, Eubina, and Captain Webster had a . fast mile and a-half, all going very well. Trumpeter and Billy slid along for a mile, but Siesta wits restricted to three-quarter speed work, as was Bateman. Minerva and The Poet did a mile and a-half fast. Barbary had two rounds over the hurdles, and Clarence wont the same distance on the flat. Black Doctor, with C. Cornelius up, had a good working gallop in company with The Pawn, P. Simpson up, and Hard Times. Most of the nogs engaged in the Hunt. Club Cup did good serviceable work, as did the two stable companions, Canard and Karaitiana, who covered a couple of rounds together. The Agent was sent twice also. Hippodamia and Tim Whifflor, who were joined by Nor’-Wester, went, fast, the length of the course. Eiccarton had a three-mile dose, and Holdorness and Grip were sent going twice round. Sou’-Woster, Lady Emma, Lady Evelyn, and the Watorsprite colt were not out when the coach left, and none of Kobinson and Lance’s horses were on the course. HERMIT.

On Saturday night business was fairly brisk, and several in the Great Autumn were pencilled for several hundreds. Salvage was booked for a few hundred at 5 to 1, and quickly rose to 100 to 25 offered, at which price Vanguard also left off, after four or five hundred had been taken at 100 to 20. Sou’-Wester was in demand at 100 to 16 and, on receiving support at that price, closed at sto 1 taken. Lady Emma had enquiries at 100 to 10, but found no layers at that price. The Poet and Leodogran were booked, the former for seven hundred at 20 to 1, while the latter was backed for a thousand’ at 100 to 2. Only limited business was done on the Champagne, Liverpool leaving off first favourite at level money offered. Saturday proved a most glorious day, though rather too hot, and it was surprising that more people did not take advantage of the beautiful weather and. spend a pleasant afternoon at Plumpton. The attendance could not have been more than 250 at any time, but those who went out had the satisfaction of witnessing some very good racing. Mr Calvert wielded the starter’s flag with his usual well-known ability, and. in every instance despatched his fields in perfect order. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin’s totalisator, on account of the limited attendance, was not patronised to its usual extent, and put through only £503. A large number of metallicians were on the course, but did only a fair amount of business.

Old Supplejack pulled off the Hurdle Race, beating Chester, to whom he was giving 41b, and Mr Davidson’s Secretary, well ridden by Mr A. Keith, easily landed the Hunters’ Plat Eace, but Tommy, who is little more than a pony, made Secretary extend himself for the last quarter of a mile. Mr John Lunn had the pleasant duty allotted him of leading to scale two winners, viz., Eebecca in the Templeton Stakes and Whitbach in the Stewards’ Handicap. Nor’-Wester (Butler up) and Evelina (Derritt) were greatly fancied for the former event, but Eebecca, who was a long way superior to them all as far as condition went, had the race won half a mile from home. The Trot produced a held of eight, and a good race was made of it, the winner turning-up in the little thought of Narrow Gauge, who returned his half dozen supporters a dividend of i>l9 7s. The Hack Eace saw a very hot crowd go to the post, including such constant performers as Lady Helen, Wee Eoddie, Orange Peel, Johnny, and Nor’-Wester, and after a rattling good finish resulted in a victory by a nose for Wee Eoddie. The following are the details: — Handicap Hubbub Eace, of 13 sovs. Two

At the back of the course, Eebecca came through, and

a quarter of a mile from home challenged Nor’-Wester, who shot his bolt on entering the straight.
